so my son is in cabelas union gap wa. and on the shelf is a remington 700 rmef edition stainless, camo stock and on top is a 3.5x10x40 vx3 with a boone and crockett reticle. price tag of $824.99. he was tickled pink and there went whatever he has saved. i think he got a great deal but now the search for brass and load development starts. info please fellas.

He got a fair price for that setup. It will definitely reach out and touch whatever he wants to tag with it. What bullet is he thinking of using? I would recommend a supply of 180 grain Partitions and AccuBonds together with some 200 grain pills. Powder choices may be whatever he can find, though IMR 4350 and Magnum are excellent with those bullets.

i have 180 gr and 200 gr accubonds. 210 gr matrix. imr 4350, 7828, h4831 sc, retumbo and i can get my hands on h 1000. he drew his bull elk tag for washington this year. he is so excited.

One of the favorite combos for that cartridge is:

200 gr bullet (AccuBond or Partition) and Retumbo. An honest 3150 - 3200 fps can be expected.

The cartridge is very accurate, it just takes quite the rifleman to bring out that accuracy in a sporter-weight .300 Rem Ultra Mag. That's a LOT of cartridge.

Regards, Guy

Good deal for your son, congratulations to him. Using 180 gr AB, PT, 200 gr AB, PT as well as the 190/210 gr ABLR bullets will bring out the full potential of this great round.
As for powders, look at Retumbo, H1000, RL25, RL26 and RL33.

I think your boy did great with that rifle. I'd be happy as a lark to score like that.

All I have seen from a 200 grain AB and Retumbo from the 300 Ultra is great accuracy, speeds like Guy Miner mentioned and awesome performance on elk. If it were mine, that is where I would start. A 200 grain AB at 3150-3200 is SERIOUS power...

We had the exact rifle. It did very well with 94.5g of Retumbo and a 200g AB.

We got ride of it because of the recoil it had. Of the 4, its recoil was not manageable. Now, looking back I think all it needed was to be bedded or have something done to the recoil lug area.

Does that rifle have a small scratch on the trigger guard or doe it look like its been touched up? Its near invisible.

We sold it to a guy in Yakima.... what a small world that would be eh?

I 2nd Scotty. My 300RUM loves the 200AB pushed by 95gn of Retumbo with a COL (tip to base) of 3.635". I also use Fed GM215M primers and Rem brass trimmed to 2.83". I get around 3140fps average.

Good luck finding brass. I'm pretty sure you can order 200ABs from Cabela's though.

Mine really isn't that bad to shoot, but it has a thumb-hole laminate stock with Remington's R3 pad on it.

I have a very good shooting load with 200gr. Partition and Ramshot Magnum.
Rem. brass, Fed 215 primer and 94 gr. Magnum. 3100 fps and 1" to 1.5" groups at 200 yards.

Congratulations your son bought a great caliber, well as far as I'm concerned anyway. I run a 200 AccuBond seated at 3.670 base of case to tip, 94.0 retumbo, fed 215 primer, remington brass. My velocity ave is 3198

A friend of mine bought one recently and his did not like retumbo but really like
H-1000.

200gr AB
95gr Retumbo
Fed 215
Nosler Brass

I think the 200 AB will do very well in that rifle other than stout recoil. I have a few bags of new Rem brass that I could give you a good deal on.

Man, that sorta rifle would be hard to get rid of. I have seen similar shooting from Brian's 300 as well at 300-600 to that is really impressive when you consider the power it carries.

I think your son got a very good deal, that'll be perfect for his bull hunt! I'm with the others, 200grain bullet or bigger is what I'd shoot. The 200gr AB is a great bullet, they shot well out of my .300 Winny. I'd also consider the 210 ABLR, and if your son is open to them, I'd suggest possibly trying a 230 Berger Hybrid, BC of .743, it'd really carry a load of energy! I'd be putting a brake on that rifle too it doesn't have one already, but I'm a recoil weenie  again great score for your boy!

Scotty, thanks for the kind words. Fotis sure does have some fine rifles too! And he can shoot them like a bat out of hell! Do you still have any 210 ABLR's that you aren't going to use? Would like to give a few a try out of my .300 to see how they do! If you have any you'd like to part with, PM me with what ya'd need for them, buddy!

Will use one or the other if myself or son draw an elk tag. I have not killed an animal with either bullet.

Either of those loads will work for about anything that walks. Fine work.
