300 Ultra Mag using 180 Accubonds

I need some feed back from all you AccuBond users. I developed a load last year for my 300 Ultra Mag with 180 Accubonds with the measured speed at 3372 fps. I'm questioning, is this bullet going to hold up for shooting Elk at 200 yds. to 400 yds. at this speed coupled with possibly hitting some bone ? I will be Hunting Elk in Colorado this Fall, need some assurance considering my experience as stated below:

I shot a 110lb.Whitetail Buck last year at 55yds. with my 30-06 using the AccuBond 150 going 3000 fps. it hit ribs going in but caught the shoulder blade exiting.
This Buck traveled 75 yds before going down leaving no blood trail. The internal damage was really good but the small exit hole bothered me evidenced by the bullet spent itself hitting the shoulder blade area. Yes I got the deer and the bullet did the job but the speed was not that of the 300 Ultra Mag either, need some of your thoughts.

Thanks ,

if yuou truly can't see yourself shooting any farther than the 400 yard mark maybe you should bump up to a heavier bullet. possibly the 200 gr Partition?

or if you are stricktly concerned with getting a pass through then a lead free bullet. of course you will give up some of the internal damage but pass throughs should happen.

I've shot multiple whitetails and mule deer with the AccuBond out of my 7mm WSM. I've witnessed a number of elk, moose and bison taken with the AccuBond in a variety of cartridges. The bullet will do the job. Use it with confidence. I don't hesitate to recommend it, just as I did yesterday in recommending it to gentlemen seeking a bullet for load development for a 7mm STW and another seeking load development for a 325 WSM.

I've seen whitetail travel a surprising distance when shot, and I've seen them drop at the shot. I witnessed whitetail shot through the heart and yet manage to run forty yards. The fact that you witnessed significant internal damage and the buck still managed to travel a considerable distance says more about the animal than it does about the bullet. Hit bone if you want the animal to go down immediately. This is especially true with elk and whitetail.

DON,
Welcome to the forum !

If you search around a little bit in here, there is a lot of good info in regards to your exact concern. The latest one I can think of is in the "hunting forum"
http://noslerreloading.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13049

My RUM likes the 180's much better than the 200gr Accubonds. I have more experince with the smaller 6.5 Accubonds on elk. They are without a doubt my 110% go to bullet for that round.

I will be hunting elk this fall with more than likely the 180gr A-bond out of my RUM. IMO - I can't think of a better elk combo. If yours shoots them well, I wouldn't hesitate to bring it out here.
Good Luck !

Thanks to all for your input:

Dr. Mike,
Couldn't agree with you more on the Whitetail Deer experiences, I have killed more than my share with varying results as you stated. Nosler makes an awesome product selection and I have never seen any bullet they produce fail, when properly applied.

I moved to Tennessee 3-yrs. ago from the Front Range in Colorado, lived there 10-yrs. Miss it tremendously, travel back to Hunt as much as I can.
Good to see another Colorado Hunter on this site.

My rifle groups this load 1/2" @ 100yds and does so with R-25, the current powder used, as well as Retumbo Powder. I'm very pleased with the results, just have never killed an Elk with this particular Rifle or Load. Past Elk kills were with the 7mm Rem Mag. using Partitions.

Half-inch groups and nearly 3400 fps with a Nosler AccuBond...

The poor old elk doesn't stand a chance. He's already dead, and simply doesn't know it!

DON

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you here with us.

The 300 RUM with the 180 gr AB is a great deer/elk bullet and will work well.
Use the 180 gr AB with confidence, it will take out shoulders on elk with ease.
If you want more down range energy, go with the 200 gr AB, it will make your 300 RUM a true long range hammer on elk.

Howdy Don.
I use the Ab's now and last year made a good shot on a mule deer with my 7 Mag. the deer dropped in its tracks. Right now I am using the 200 grain AB's in a new 300 Rum . a lot of them came with the gun when i bought it from the classifides here on the forum, so after I stuck a different scope on it the groups are good and I plan on using it for elk next year in Wyoming or Colorado. This year is Wyoming for Antelope and I'll probably use the 7 again, but it will still be with the AB's.
I live in Tn too good to have you on here, but It must have been hard leaving Colorado for this heat and humidity!

Thanks for all the replies and input.

Going forward I will use the 180 AccuBond for Elk this year , cannot wait to put the hammer down on one. I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences as it proves to aid in selecting bullets, at least in my case.

JDMAG :
You have no idea how difficult it has been adjusting to the heat in the South.
The weather in Colorado is more acceptable for me. But this is where I need to be at this time in my life. Colorado is the Mecca for Big Game Hunting and is dearly missed.
