300 WSM Loads?

Hey fellas my little bro just bought a 300 WSM and I have no experiance with them. He's wanting to shoot 180 gr, NAB for everything. Was nondering if anybody had any good loads that worked for a starting point, and what kind of velocities can I expect from a 24" Remington SPS.

You might hit 3000fps, but probly 2900-2950 in most cases. I dont have any experience loading the 300 WSM inparticular, but have read loads of info on it and thats about what there averaging with 180g bullets in most circumstances.

H414 (59.0 grains) 2801 fps up to (62.5 grains) 2959 fps
H4350 (60.0 grains) 2799 fps up to (64.0 grains) 2950 fps
H4831 (65.5 grains) 2704 fps up to (70.0 grains) 2929 fps
H380 (57.0 grains) 2718 fps up to (61.0 grains) 2884 fps
Now my book is running on the (HOT) side so start with the lowest grain and work up. But if you need anymore loads just let me know.

I'd try H4350 and work up to 2900-2950fps. 64-65grains(max) with a Fed 215 should be the ticket.
IMR 4831 also works well with the 180's. 2980fps was possible in my rifle with a max book charge.
Of course work up carefully.

.......................I really can`t add anything more. However, keep your eye out for some of the new REL 17, supposedly approved by the DOT for shipment.

According to the testing done by Alliant, this powder gave the best velocity in the 300 WSM using the same 180 gr. bullet. Rel 17 gave a top velocity of 3089 fps, a 104 fps increase over the former 1st place powder in the Speer manual, which is listed at 2985 fps.

Rel 17 was developed specifically for the WSM`s. I`m on my dealer`s list for two lbs. to try in my 300 WSM.

There is a 2/12/08 press release on the Alliant web site concerning Rel 17 and if I`m not mistaken, some reloading data as well and their findings of which I described above......

jmad, I'm shooting a Kimber Montana in 300WSM. With a 24 inch barrel I'm getting 3020FPS with 70.2 grains of Re22 and a 180 Partition. No signs of pressure and the load is very accurate. 64.5 Grains of IMR 4350 gives me 3050FPS with a 180 grain Partition but that's definitely the upper limit in my rifle and invery hot weather (Florida style) the Case heads start to get a little shiny. During the winter down here (70 degrees or less) the load works fine. accuracy is just a touch less than the Re22.

I also have found Ramshot Hunter to be one of the best powders for the 300 WSM. My only regret was not trying it sooner. 8)

I load for three 300WSM rifles and Ramshot Hunter is clearly the powder of choice in all three.
