jiggs,
One of my hunting partners had the same troubles w/ a model 70 featherweight .300 wsm. He found 180's were the answer w/ H-4831 & CCI lrm primers. He started low & worked up in 1/2 grain incriments till he got what he was looking for. Best of luck to ya!

Do not just pick one load and go out there man.

You should take the BT's for instance and make 3 shots per load.

Start at 67 or so and make 3 rounds in each grain see if that makes a difference. Also what optics are you using? Is the mounting system slipping? Are stock screws torqued correctly?

The fact that you have the Ruger MK II SS may be the problem..........I had one in .338 for my wife and I never could get it to shoot worth a damn. I tried everything and I mean everything. Numerous bullets, powders, primers, seating depths, bedding, etc, etc.....you name it I looked at it and it just plain wouldn't shoot.

I got rid of it.

Well, the other guys are right, you need to try other loads.

In the 300 WSM I tested I got the best results with a 180 grain Nosler Partition and a max load of IMR 4831 sparked by a Fed 215M primer.

On the other hand, if you had it rechambered and pillar bedded, maybe, just maybe, the gunsmithing is to blame.

Jiggs, It almost sounds like a bedding problem. I am shooting a Kimber Montana .300WSM that shoots both 165 grain and 180 Grain partitions great when using IMR4831 and a Federal 215 primer.

the first thing i would do is get somebody else to shoot the rifle. Consistent 1/2" groups are about as easy to find as bigfoot. I know everybody on almost every forum i've been on shoots them all the time but when ever I goto the range i don't see it. Sometimes different people shoot different guns well. When i went to the range the other day the kid i was with shot his model 70 great at least in my terms. 1 1/2" with a varying wind to about 20 mph. I was shooting about 4-5 in. groups. when we switched guns i was shooting my sporterized mauser into 1" or less and he was shooting all over the place. different guns different people.

From 1/2 to 4inch groups with the same load??? I would look at the hardware (scope, mounts, rifle). I have never had a load shoot 1/2 inch and then 4 inch without a hardware issue. First I would check the scope and mounts, switch the scope with a known shooter. If that isn't the problem I would bring it back to a different smith and have it checked out.

backed off the powder and back to a 1 1/4 group andtryed a new can the other can of powder may have two types of powder in it or it may of been old

I could not get a new rem mountain rifle in .30-06 to give me decent groups 3 to 4" groups were consistent. I was shooting 180 grain partitions with different powder loads and all that. when i switched to 165gr, i started getting 1" and less at 100. Just a real picky rifle I guess.

Been loading my Win 70 now for about a year and half!

Best Vel. with IMR 4831
69.5 @ 165 Bullets

Good results with Mag Pro

Good results with RL 19
70.5 @ 165 Bullets

All use Fed 215GM or WLRM Primers
FC or WW Cases

Bullet seating depth played a big part in mine for accuracy!

Nosler 180gr AB
IMR4831-65.5gr
Fed 215M
WW case

COAL-2.880

Provided the barrel is broken in, this load should print better than 1"
