You have to love those Tikka's. My son's short mag is amazing with RL-22 in both 165 Partitions and 180 BT's. Kraky,300 yard shooting like that is amazing. 8)
This gun shoots really good. From new it's had a burris 3-9 bp on it. No doubt it's on of those "lucky" groups but at our range we have a couple of tables with mechanical rests on them. They are kind of like a "lead sled" only they are mounted to the table. Takes the shooter out of things a bit.
This tikka is without a doubt the best shooting factory gun I've ever owned. I always "wanted" a custom light weight but couldn't force myself to put out $2000 for one. Now for $550 I got a gun that shoots most bullets to the same point of impact and most likely better than I can shoot.
If I had ever come up with the $2k and got a gun as slick as this I think I would have been happy.
Now I'm trying to figure out if I should "risk" putting a muzzle brake on this gun. Even though I'm a pretty big guy this gun at 7# 20z's kicks really hard. Oh well.....it's all in the game of shooting and having fun.
I am not a fan of muzzle brakes. With a rifle that shoots this good, I don't think I would want to take a risk of changing anything! For bench work, you could always shoot lighter loads and leave the heavy ones for hunting.
What does your rifle have for a recoil pad? A Pachmyer Decelerator pad or Limbsaver recoil pad will make a big difference in felt recoil. Another option is to get a Past Magnum Shooting Pad. You wear it when you are target shooting and they are supposed to work well at dissipating the recoil.
I've got a good aftermarket pad on it. The burris scopes have about 3.5" eye relief and even though I go 275# the scope still bings my eyeglasses once in a while. My local smith has done a numbe of brakes for me and my friends with no change in accuracy. He ports them straight out the side instead of back at you which makes them fairly quiet. The trigger on this gun is nice and I shoot it good off sandbags but.........I'm about 50-50 on the brake idea. I also have a 300 wby, 340 wby, and 30-378 with brakes so they don't offend me. Just not sure what I'll do yet!
