.308 Win & .30-06 loads

I am a newbie to this forum. I have been reloading for years.

I have a .30-06 formerly using 180 grain bullets and 55 gr. IMR 4350 powder. I have acquired some Nosler 125 gr Ballistic tip.

I am looking for a flatter trajectory, more accurate load with less recoil.

I will be using it for hunting hogs at under 200 yds.

Is the 125 gr Ballistic Tip the best bullet for my use?

What would be the powder load? Is IMR 4350 recommended?

Would I use the same load for the .308 Win.?

BT's are designed to open up below 3000 fps.
Hogs can often get big and tough. Using a light weight BT at the upper limits of design at close range, you are asking for disappointment.
I would go with a 150 gr PT. Penetration will be more than enough for a hog and the recoil will be less than the 180 gr loads.
In the 30-06, IMR4350 start at 55.0 grs to a MAX of 59.0 grs.
In the 308 Win, try IMR4895 or IMR4064.

I've found the 30-180 Partition to be accurate enough in my 30-06 with your same load to hit small water bottles out to 450yards. I plan to try it farther out once I get a range finder. For my target shooting I like my .308 Win with the Nosler Custom Brass and 168CC. I've loaded it with Fed210M and IMR4064 which works great. RL15, Benchmark, H4895, IMR4895, H380 and a whole list of others are also great powders in the .308 Win. Finn Aargard liked the 150gr bullets in the .308Win, chosing the bullet construction to the game. However his buddy used 180gr Partitions in his .308Win for elk, which would also be a good load for pigs. Split the difference JD and go with a 165gr Partition?

I also like the 150 gr Accubonds in my 308. But that's only because I can't get a 165 gr AB (hint, hint, hint). My 15" Encore 308 barrel loves the IMR4350 with about 47 grs. My very best loads are with 47.5 grs seated well beyond SAAMI max length (because my gun is single shot, I don't have a magazine concern). This load uses Fed GMM - mag primers, OAL = 2.955" (.030" off the lands) in a Remington case. There are a lot of folks that use Varget in their 308's, but in my gun,even though the SD's were good, the groups were not impressive. I plan on doing some more load development with the Varget next year (too close to hunting season to mess around now). :lol: :lol:

I was using a 185 gr SPBT for the hogs. It was a definite stopper.

Just this last weekend a friend shot a 85lb hog with an HMR177 cal. with a well placed shot behind the ear.

I have shot hog with the .308 using a 150 gr SPBT. It also works well.

I will give the 150 gr BT with the 06 but I had some 125 BT that were given to me and I thought I would try them out.
