Something I've been playing with, in the back of my mind, for awhile is a 338Fed, but I really don't like the current offerings from the gun mfg's, except the now discontinued Ruger 77. It's intended to be my go-to bear, pig, Pa/Ky Elk (if I ever draw) rifle.

Plan A was to keep looking, and hoping I could find a M77, at the same time I had $$$ to spare. Plan B rebarrel and restock my Rem 600, but I kinda dig it the was it is, and I've spent a lot of years with that little killer. Plan C, find a shot out Ruger and follow the rest of Plan B.

Well, Plan C has gone into action....sorta.

I found a NIB Ruger American Wolf, in 308, on line for $289. BINGO !! No need to restock it, it's just fine the way it is. No trigger job needed either. A friend suggested I re-bore it, instead of a new barrel. Thoughts? Sure would save some cash.
Also, JES has been recommended. Any more thoughts?

A number of my friends have had JES rebore rifles... all were entirely happy with the work and the quick turnaround he's known for.

It's a slam dunk in my opinion.

Second JES. Good guy.
I'm in for the Ky draw also. Long odds but close to home.

I picked up a Winchester Featherweight in .243. Screwed on a new barrel, and voilà--a 338 Federal. Shoots lights out and has accounted for a moose, so far.

JES does good work I'm really happy with my 30-06 to 9.3X62 conversion on a M70 it even shoots straight.

JES has done well by me as well. I'm planning more in the future. Just can't beat the chance to try something out for so a decent price.

I have a .338 Federal, Sako 85. It shoots well and likes 210 Partitions or 200 grain Accubonds. Shoots the 200 grain at 2600 with handloads, very accurately and should kill elk and bear with no drama?

I just loaded up some trial loads in my Hawkeye All Weather 77 with Barnes 160 TTSX and Power pro 2000MR. Guesstimates figure I should get right at 3000fps or real close! My SIL used this rifle with the Barnes 185 TSX on a fat muley a couple years ago. It kills great, doesn't beat you up and doesn't ruin a lot of meat either. I wish I would have had this rifle when I was a teen in SE Texas!

My .338 Federal shooting 210 Nosler Partitions kicks about the same as my Model 70, .30-06. The 210 PT a 2600 should good elk medicine, if I ever get a chance to use it elk. Mine is a Model 85 Sako which handles the recoil pretty well?
