338 winmag or 375 H&H

Guys,
If you were givin an opportunity to get any gun from a manufactorer what caliber would you get? I had the dreaded .223 Wssm and they cannot fix it. They said to pick out any gun I wanted. They gave me a generous credit. I have all the calibers up to .308 . I want a big caliber to play with. Which one would you go with and why?

For big game, you won't go wrong with either calibre. The 338 WM may have more options in bullets and/or factory ammunition, but the 375 will allow for that Africa trip you were always planning. Great dilemma.

You are picking between two great calibers so the decision is going to depend on what you are going to use it for. The 338 Win Mag will give you some serious horse power for the big critters, but not too much to use it for deer hunting. Of course the same could be said for the 375 H&H. You can also load down the 375 for deer and load it up for anything, including elephant.

If it were me, I think I would go with the 375 H&H. You have a lot of flexibility and would have a caliber that can take any game animal on the globe.

I am leaning on the 375. In a couple of years I would like to go to Africa to Hunt and I do have a 30-378 which should handle any plains animals. I just don't have that really big bore and thats the biggest browning has to offer with my credit.

Sounds as if the choice is made! It is a great calibre, and as JD has said, you can load it down for deer. It will meet the minimum standards required in some jurisdictions in Africa, and it will certainly work for plains game there.

Yep, 375. Like mentioned, it to can be down-loaded with lighter weight bullets for deer and such.

Much the same would also apply to the 375 H&H.

If you foresee a trip to Africa, you`ll need a 375 for the dangerous stuff. There is no better a caliber from elk, to moose, to bison, the big bears, then to Africa for plains game and dangerous game, than a 375.

Remove the dangerous African game from the list, then the 338 is a good choice. However, you don`t need to go to Africa to own a 375. The bison bulls over here can and do grow larger and heavier than do the caped buffs in Africa.

Given the choice and credit you have coming, I`d certainly go with a 375 before the 338.

You can load heavy or light bullets and shoot jackrabbits to elephants. Not too many hunter take on elephants or cape buffalo with the 338. Like my mentor taught me."If you're going to be a bear, BE A GRIZZLY"!!!

I think he has to pick from what Browning sells. I'm guessing Browning, because I think only them and the former Winchester produced rifles in the WSSM (Win Super Sucky Mag). I could be wrong. Browning doesn't have any RUMs and I don't think they have jumped on the Ruger cartridges either.

If you're replacing a 223 wssm I'm surprised that you are not considering a 22-250 or 220 Swift. That 375H&H may be a bit much on vermin. :lol:

I bought a .222 browning A-bolt last week and have a 22-250 and a 243 that I use for the p dogs. The only reason I bought the 223wssm was the price 350.00.

I would liketo know more. Where and what do you hunt. ? And how much experence have you had shooting magnum rifles. ?
Also, a .375 H&H is likly to cost a bunch more than a .338 win.
As stated both are real good rounds.
I have a .338. Like it alot. But I want, a .375. I really don't need one.
About the only things I would not hut with my .338 are Elephant Rhino Cape buffalo and Lion.
There may be some other critters I can't think of , but most any thing else i would cheerfully hunt with my .338 Win.
Also there are alot more good rifles to choose from in the .338.
But if just want a .375 H&H buy one. the want is reason enough !
Oh yes, i forgot to mention the .338 is cheaper to shoot and to load for...tj3006

The biggest magnum is a 30-378 weatherby and a 270 weatherby mag, 454 cassull. I have plenty of varmint guns 222,22-250,243, Medium game 270win 270mag 30-06. 35rem, I have been to Alaska 12 times and just might try hunting there one of these times. When I get done with night school My gift to myself is a trip to Africa for plains game. I do all of the handloading myself. The gun has to be something that browning has on there web page.

Well, the A-Bolt Medallion is the only Bolt rifle I can find on the Browning site the is offered in the 375H&H. So If you like that gun, and are planning a trip to Africa, or even Alaska, Go for it! you have a 30-338 skip the .338 for now and get the 375. you can always backtrack later. :wink:

I have both a 338 and a 375 (ruger though) and I love them both. I have never shot a 30-378 but I would guess that if the recoil from that doesn't bother you then the 375 shouldn't either. Both have something to offer, so I'm going to vote for both, but go with the 375 first.

Hey Guys,
I ordered the 375 H&H today. I was really impressed with Brownings service. I did have to add a little money but I'll have to stop eating fast food for the week. Although they were out of stock they will ship me my new gun as soon as they get there new shipment in.
