I have a Rem700 with a 27" #5 Krieger barrel. I have been playing with 225 Accubonds and getting ~1.5 moa groups with bullets seated to magazine length which is .104" off the lands. If I seat the bullets to .010 off the lands (3.760 col) then accuracy goes to ~.5moa. Question is, should I install a Wyatt extended magazine box to accomodate the longer COL or should I maybe have the barrel set back and rechambered with a shorter throat? Tried RL22, RL25, IMR 7828, and Magpro powder all with similar mediocre results at magazine length seating depth. Thanks!

The easier and cheaper route would definately be to put a wyatts box in it.

I have one in my 338 EDGE in a 700 which lets me seat the 300g smk to 3.780"

Here is a clip from Wyatt

What action alterations are required on your magazine boxes?

The rear of the magazine cut-out in the bottom of the receiver must be milled back .125", and the bolt stop must be shortened .110".

Not sure how they work if you have BDL best to call them you also need one of their followers.

I forget how much my gunsith charged he did the work when he rebarrel.

I'm surprised your gunsmith throated it that long knowing the length of the magazine and I'd sure be talking to him about it. Maybe he help out on the labor end putting the Wyatt in for you.

Good luck

You might also try seating the bullet deeper until you find a second sweet spot.

You could go to Nosler Partition or even protected points . That would put the bullet a lot closer to the lands for the same OAL and unless you plan to shoot 500+ yards as a rule the difference in BC won't have a significant effect.
Just an option.

Or try the 225 gr TTSX. These were seated .05" off

You should be able to get a lot closer with the TTSX but probably could reach the lands with a regular TSX.

Woods,

Nice shooting load you have there. RL 25 works well with the 225 gr bullets in the 338 RUM. I shoot 96.0 grs with the 225 gr AB for .5 MOA.

Thanks, there's a little bit of information that may have some bearing on this subject for tpbscha. This was a rebarrel of a 338 win mag and luckily the win mag had a long magazine (3.685") so I sent a loaded unprimed round to the gunsmith that was 3.620" and told him to set the lands there.

Now that is pretty short for a 338RUM, especially when most 33RUM have a long throat like a Weatherby. So my gun has a smaller combustion chamber than most and those loads I posted loosen primer pockets.

I am now down to 94 gr RL25 and oddly enough haven't lost any velocity.

So I had mine rebarreled with a short throat and tpbscha has a long throat, probably close to factory specs. If he gets a longer magazine and can seat his bullets out further than that may be the better way to do it, that way he can shoot reloads or factory ammo.

Thanks for the info guys! I have loaded some more test rounds at some slightly deeper seating depths. Also loaded some partitions. Back to the range!
