So I must confess.

I never thought in a zillion years that any rifle would enamor me as much as a m70 in .270. Fast forward to two weeks ago and I took possession of a 1951 M70 in 375H&H. I worked up some loads of IMR 4064 and Hornady 225gr Spire Points. I went to the range last Friday early and started at 50 yards. This is with new Rem brass. Rifle has a Lyman 48 peep sight that I mounted on her. All shots off bags on the bench.

After a few shots to get down to the bull I settled in with a 6 o'clock hold. Three shots as fast as I could shoot, run the bolt, get back down settled, two breaths and squeeze.

I only had 6 rounds left and I wanted to drop back to 100 yards, but didn't want to waste ammo shooting at small targets, so I decided to head home, load some more to identical specs, and head back out.

I also had my M71 which is now my number one rifle for here in Missouri. I had my max loads of IMR450 under a Hornady 200gr FP. Same distance. Lyman Peep.

I also wanted to stretch the legs on this rifle as well, so I went home and loaded up some once fired brass and waited to return.

Today I went out and set up my homemade "deer target" and went to work. I set up at 100 yards and unlimbered the M71. Cold bore three shots as fast as I could shoot, run the lever, settle back down and re squeeze.

Needless to say I was smiling from ear to ear.

I covered up those holes with tape and started in on the 375.

I didn't recordit but the first shot was 8 inches high. I moved the Lyman slide and shot agian. Now it was high 4 inches. I moved the slide again and now it was low. One more tap of the slide and and I let her cool down.

After 15 minutes or so I loaded her up again and let it rip. Here is the group. The last shot is the one to the right, I felt that stock had slid out of my shoulder pocket, but I squeezzed anyway.

I made one slight adjustment to bring it down slightly and put her up to cool.

I shot some 270ABLR loads and my CZ 452 while I waited.

Then I loaded one more out of a cold bore and let her rip.

I am more than happy with this 62 year old rifle.

You have a couple of fine rifles shooting some great loads, Pat. I'd say you're ready to drift through the trees in MO. Best of luck to you during the season.

A .348 and .375 - what a great pair of medium bores!

Whitetail, and anything else are in trouble. The results from those loads look good. IMR 4064 is good in the .375, no doubt.

Good shooting. Mighty ugly deer though. I'd shoot it too.
