I just ordered up some 275 gr Woodleigh Protected Points to try in my 35 Whelen, anyone have any loads to share? I always wanted to try Woodleigh bullets and since American made bullets are in short supply these days I thought it would be a good time to branch out. I have Varget, H 4895, IMR 8208 and Big Game to try, Big Game is a bit slow burning for the Whelen but might be a good choice for a heavy bullet like that especially since it has great loading density. Might be able to get around 2450-2500 fps safely with the right powder, who knows the 250 gr Speer and this slug might be my heavy bullet loads in this gun. Would still like to try the 250 gr Partition in it one day though.

I have a couple of boxes of the Woodleigh 275 PP bullets. They are on my "to do" list, Gerry. The Woodleigh site used to have some info, but I couldn't locate it today. They did have info on "loads for heavier than standard bullets." The load data for the 35 Whelen was for the 310 grain RN. That would be a fearsome round! Here is a QL projection to give you some idea of what powders to use.

Cartridge : .35 Whelen
Bullet : .358, 275, Woodleigh PP WeldCore 53B
Useable Case Capaci: 58.602 grain H2O = 3.805 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch = 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 20.0 inch = 508.0 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 59000 psi, or 406 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 110 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

This is from the Hornady manual #1 circa 1967.
4895, no mention if H or IMR. My guess is it's the original milsurps that showed up after the war.

Start: 43.8gr./1900 FPS Max: 52.0 gr./2300 FPS.

Dunno how that will work with today'd 4895's but that's all I have. I do have 35 of those discontinued in 1967 Hornady bullets. 8)

That's pretty cool Gerry. Can't wait to see what they do. Those 275's around 2400-2500 would put your 375 Ruger outta business!

I have some 310 Woodleigh's I need to try out someday, but those 275's are very cool and they just gotta be hammers. Please run one into the jugs for us. Haven't ever seen a Woodleigh recovered from the jugs..

Thanks Mike and Paul for your help, much appreciated. Looks like RL 17 might do well if I'm not happy with the powders I have. I think I will try H 4895, Varget and Big Game first and go from there. Those big 310's are interesting but I opted for the 275 gr PP since it is rated for higher impact velocities (2200 vs 2600 fps) and it should do better at longer ranges. Woodleigh lists some data for the 310 gr SP, 57 gr of RL 15 for 2435 fps, pretty potent load. Scotty, I will definitely run some through the jugs and see what they will do, while I like the big 375 Ruger it may go down the road to fund a shotgun for this fall.

Mike, it is interesting to see that Trade Ex moved recently from Montreal to Hawksbury Ontario, I wonder if it has something to do with all the nonsense the political powers in Quebec have been giving the rest of us in regards to the now defunct gun registry.

I wasn't aware that Tradex had moved. My last purchase was just this past winter, and they were still in Quebec at that time. You may be correct in your speculation for the reason they moved. I was quite pleased with their service.

Having to deal with Quebec and whatever is going on with the gun registry there stopped me from purchasing anything from there, but now things are different that they have moved to Ontario now, they have some very interesting firearms there. I must add I feel for those honest firearms owners that live there that have to put up with that nonsense, we have several great guys from there posting here from time to time.

Gerry you should get a MAGNUM for those bullets - like a 358 Shooting Times Alaska or such ! 358 STA ! LMBO ! Cheers RJ

Well said, Gerry. There are some fine gentlemen from Quebec posting here.

I am with you Gerry. I am wondering if those 275 Woodleighs will stabilize in my 1-16" twist, but I would try them for sure.

They look pretty awesome though...

2500 with that 275 would really be pretty danged close to a 375. Granted, the 375 is always going to beat it out, but nowadays with bullets like we have available and the powders, it really is a poor mans 375 H&H... I know I wouldn't care about any difference between the two of them.. Wished my 35 had a better twist for these heavier bullets. I think they would be a blast. Plus, 2500 is plenty flat shooting to 300 yards with the Whelen and I know it would still hammer just about anything and then some. Talk about big bear medicine. I am really looking forward to seeing what you end up with. Can't wait to see the bullet out of the jugs.

I noticed they have some bullets designed for the 338 Federal, price isn't too bad for those either.

I did pick up some of these last fall, though I haven't don't anything with them yet. I also grabbed some that were designated for the 325 WSM. I believe I need to get to work with all my Woodleigh stash.

Well Gerry...

you just go ahead with these "Woodys"..

The woodleighs are very very soft and the velocities they recommend on the homesite is velocities you would be wise to duplicate.
I would´n hesitate to use a 310Grain in your wheelchair. If you get about 2250-2290 f/sec it will pull everything down. I use a .333Jeffery shooting 300grainers woody softpoints @ 2280 ft/sec. The make a bloody kill on game. I know the .35wheelie winky will do exacty the same.

Happy huntin´..

I know I would give them a try as well. They look like some great bullets from all I have seen and they certainly carry some great recommendations on alot of other places for their game taking ability.
