.35 Whelen article.

I use 59.0 grs RL 15 with the 250 gr PT and get 2575 fps from my 700 Classic 22" barrel.
The 35 Whelen is a great round.

I have been thinking about trying RL-15 in my Whelen. After reading this post I will for sure. !

Lately, the magic is FINDING RL15! I'm running IMR4320 just because it was available. I'll get some 15 when I can, and give it a whirl. As it sits, I'm getting 2500fps for 250's from my M70's 24" barrel, and just over MOA accuracy at 200 yards.

Oh, and my '70 has a 12 twist.

I almost always agree with Mr B, but he is wrong on two things; the Ackley Improved isn't the most useless Improved design of the Whelen because it does improve case life with basically no stretching of fired cases, it improves headspacing problems caused by some factory loads or improperly sized cases, and the 1/16 can/does in fact stabilize my 310gr Woodleighs at 2424 fps, significant increase in velocity & accuracy over the standard case. I also get 2750 with the Nosler 250 Partition, 2970 with the older 200 X w/secant ogive and 2950 with the 200 TTSX with both under 1", a definite "Improvement/Increase" of velocity and I do this with a 22" barrel Remington 700 classic. I've still got cases I first loaded back in '95 and primer pockets are still tight. I was taught to avoid phrases with "never and always", in which "the most useless improvement/it won't stabilize anything over 250gr" most surely compare...lol

You aren't missing much with your load Tom. I am sure you have some room to grow as well. Should be pretty easy to get 2550-2600 outta your rifle if you wanted or needed it. Whitetails at 20 yards don't need too much more than what your selling, UNLESS you step up the grandaddy of he Whelen's!

Hey now...just because I shoot 'em close doesn't mean they will ALL be that close!

Man, and here I've been bragging on you as a hunter and not a shooter. I'll have to reassess.

Ha! Wouldn't be the first time someone thought they might have to reassess.....as long as it's not my wife doing the reassessment, I can handle it! :)

The two deer I've shot with the Whelen were both well under 30 yard shots....one was 25 yards and the other was 17-18 yards.

The Whelen makes a distinct impression upon whitetail bucks at such yardages.

That was left by the deer shot at 17-18 yards. He was hit forward of the near shoulder and exit was about 3 ribs behind the far shoulder. He went maybe 20-25 yards leaving blood like that, or more, the whole way.

I've taken 17 WT bucks with the 35 Whelen and it does hit them hard. The 225 gr PT puts them on the ground fast with a high lung shot. I had to blood trail 3-4 and those were short and heavy.

Yes I would say so  the buck likely didn't know if he had been punched or bored  !

Blessings,

Everybody here, let's have a moment of silence to think about what an awesome cartridge the old Colonel created so long ago. Amen! Ha.

It is an awesome performer. Hard to tell folk show hard it hits and it's not a short range cartridge at all.

It'll get them 225 and 250's out there without drama. It's a good one most people real like when they give it a shot.

In case anyone is interested, HANDLOADER Magazine has a good article by Brian Pearce on the .35 Whelen in the April issue (#289).

I have said in the past that the 35 Whelen is a 400 yr elk rifle.
There is a Marine I know that shot some pretty good groups at 600 yds.

You put a good scope on a Whelen and use it with a good rangefinder and it will make those longer shots just as easy as most any other cartridge. Plus, the Whelen still rings steel pretty well from the 600 yard line.

Guys this past fall on our Elk hunt :) I used my Leica 1600B & then relied on the 35 Whelen with a 225gr AB in it. If my memory serves me right the Leica stated in was 507yards & we are eating Elk tonight .
The load was from Scott using RL15 :) thanks Scott!
I never really thought of distance until my partner stated man that rifle can reach out 8).
Blessings,
Dan
