Thanks for the info, there isn't a lot of data out on it like you said. I would like to try those 310 gr bullets one day to see what they will do. I did work up a load with the 275 gr Woodleigh using 60 gr Big Game with a CCI 250 for 2463 fps from a 24" barrel. Either would be great for close range grizzly, moose and elk. I have read about the 310 gr soft nose being used on large game in Africa too like buffalo and other large animals. I'm sure more than a few buffalo in Australia have met their end with those two bullets.

Here is a thread on the 275 gr bullet test it opened up quite wide.

The 310 is a sledge hammer. I shot one at roughly 2200 FPS out of my Whelen and it went through 4 feet of milk jugs.

Does a standard twist 35 Whelen adequately stabilize those heavy bullets?

Are they long, or more blunt?

Thanks! Guy

That's impressive! (y)

Guy,

The twist calculator says the 310 is fine at 1:16, but many have said it doesn't work. Not sure on the 275's length. My rifles are 1:12 and 1:14 so I don't have any issue.

Great info. Might be a good candidate for my Winchester 1895 35 whelen.

I would think a standard 16 would be sufficient. It’s going to be a close range round and run out of steam fairly quickly. But within its effective range? Wow! Only downside for me would be recoil. My rifle is around 8# and 250’s are plenty for me.

The Woodleigh folks are great. Sent me some data for 160gr in 6.5 CM. Another limited range round but excellent accuracy and penetration when range limitations are understood.

Digging up a thread .....

I would love to shoot those 275's Between 1750-1850 fps. The ranges I hunt at here in AR are very short (Less than 100 yds. in thick forest). That 275 at Low speed would put a whomping on a deer or big pig. I will have to do some Quickload data research to see what powders would shoot that velocity safely. Thank you for the load data you posted.

You can look at the Woodleigh website for more info. I believe they list the velocity floor for good expansion for their bullets.
