I heard on another forum that there was a lot of love for the old Whelen here so I had to join. For some reason it took me three or four tries to get it done, still not sure why. In the 70's I started shooting the Whelen my father built for me. At the time I did not know any one else who shot one. I still only know one other guy other guy who uses one and I think that is from dads influence on him. I have really enjoyed seeing how many others shoot one and like them also.
When I started shooting a Whelen dad had an arctic fit and loaded up close to 1000 rounds. He used 49 grains of 3031 and a 250 grain Hornady spire points. I have never checked but I don't think they were more than 2300 fps. What I did know was every thing they hit died so why mess around. Now with all the new bullets and powders it is neat to see what it can do when pushed.

Lots of love for the 35 Whelen here!
And there are a number of threads here to review discussing the 35 Whelen, whether it be about the rifles, the cartridge, the ammunition, and/or the handloads for it.
While I do not own one, I have used a friend's to take a cow elk.
I am a fan of the 35 cal cartridges though, as I do have two 358 Win rifles (A custom LH Rem 700, and a pre-81 BLR), and a 356 Win (Model 94 Big Bore).

I bought one of the 700 classics when they first came out. It has sat in the safe the whole time as I always reached for the trusted Mauser first. I guess it is about time to see how it shoots,if the snow around here ever melts.

Another big Whelen fan here. I have 3 at last count and always have room for another. Might need to dust off the bolt gun this year and work it out a little.

You can't go wrong choosing a Whelen and there is not much that you can not harvest with it. My son shoots a Whelen. I built a 33-06 Ackley and If I had a do over it would be a Whelen.
