.358 norma

It's basically a 338 Win Mag necked up to 358 caliber. It's better to form with 300 Win Mag brass, but that's a little more than you asked. Really, in a normal 24" tubed rifle your looking at 2800 with 250's and about 2900 or so with 225's. It's one of my favorites, since I love the 358's alot.

I think if you hunt heavy, big game, the big Norma really brings alot of bullet weight to the table with a minimal amount of fuss.

Are you thinking of one?

Scotty's assesment sounds pretty good, Double Tap's ammo is rated at 2850 fps for a 250 gr Partition and 3000 fps for the 225 gr AccuBond so the speeds he mentioned are definitely possible. I might as well just give in and have my Sako rechambered to it since I can't get it and the 270 Wby out of my mind  Norma's brass is top notch which is another plus.

Scotty nailed it.
The 358 Norma Mag is an excellent big game round, but is often over looked.
Talk about an elk hammer.

I passed on building on a few years back, and I've mourned ever since. It is definitely on my "want" list.

I have a 338 win that is shot out. its a rem 700 circa 1972 or so.

thinking this might be a fine build.

what is the 358 sta

I would do a 358 Norma before a 358 STA it gets some great performance and for a magnum you don't burn a lot of powder doing it.

Well said, Gerry. The .358 Norma has real appeal in my estimate.

Might as well just go ahead and each of us have one made Mike it's going to happen anyway at some point :)

I am looking forward to a big 35 in the future. I will likely swing to a 35 Newton, as I already have a set of dies for it, but the Norma still sits VERY high on the list if I cannot get my hands on a Newton reamer when the time comes.

YD, check out JES Reboring.

They could have that old 338 Win Mag rebored into a 358 pretty quick compared to alot of other smithing duties and I have yet to see anyone disappointed or read of anyone that didn't like what got done.

The 358 Norma can be used in a long action, the 358 STW is longer and needs a magnum length action.
I had my 358 Norma built on a Ruger action after I shot out the 300 Win Mag barrel that it had on it.
75gr H4350 gave me 2800+ fps with a 250 NPT.
