I've been waiting a week for a response from Hornady in regards to this combo and I'm getting impatient with the lack of a response. I've searched numerous boards and found some vague experiences but nothing concrete. Based upon what I see for 356Win & FTX load data and comparisons to 358WIn & 200gr PSP/Spire point data I have an idea where I could probably safely start but I feel it can't hurt to reach out.

I currently have IMR-3031, IMR-4064, H-4895, and Varget that should suffice. This is for a BLR and it's 20" barrel and 2.830 max OAL magazine.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

CC, I have had alot of luck with W748 recently. I know it is an oldie, but it seemed to work really well in my BLR 358 with the 225gr PT's. I am thinking it might be decent with 200's as well. I didn't have much luck with Varget, AA2520, or H4895 when I did my previous testing. Not saying they won't work, just that they didn't work as well as W748 for accuracy. Speed, they were all about the same. Scotty

I keep hearing the W748 and H-322 are best for the 200gr bullets. I may just have to take a road trip out to PA to a gunshop that carries the Winchester powders and TAC which I've been jonesing to use for 225 and 250gr out of the 358Win.

TAC is on my TO DO list as well. I had a can in my hand last weekend and put it back. I figure if W748 doesn't work, than I can move to TAC. I hear alot of good about it.

I know the 200gr Silvertip factory loads shoot really well out of my Browning and I would bet money they are loaded with W748 from the factory as well. Give W748 a try with the 225's, I doubt you would be disappointed. It shot well and had great speed, plus, it is still one of the cheapest powders out there. Scotty

That's great data Mike. Makes me wanna work with the FTXs a little. Nearly 2700 with all those powders seems pretty good to me. Might have to grab a box the next time I see them. I still think a protected point AB would really shine in the 35 Rem and 358 Win. Scotty

Agreed. If my 20" barrel managed 3-5% less velocity I would be very pleased with those numbers. Not sure how the FTX will hold up at 25-2600fps but I plan on finding out!!

Thanks for all the load data Mike, I'll put it to good use.

I have 100 of these and unless I find something extraordinary, they exist for range work only.

I have a can of TAC sitting at home, that I bought for loading .223s. I may have to try it in my .358 as well.

I've had very good success with TAC in the .358. However, a powder that is overlooked is 10X, which gives me virtually identical velocities and good accuracy. The old standbys are H335, IMR3031 and IMR4895, any of which work very well in the .358. I do apologise for running the data with a 22 inch barrel, but the pressure curves will be unaffected. Final projected velocities will be as follows:

50.5 grains of H335, 2605 fps
45.0 grains of 10X, 2599 fps
51 grains of TAC, 2601 fps
52.0 grains of IMR4895, 2636 fps
50.5 grains of H4895, 2619 fps
52 grains of W748, 2637 fps

Heck, don't sweat that.

I had guestimated loads for the H4895 and W748, and they were ~2gr less for max loads. I'm glad you posted tho because I trust Quickload much more than my mental prowess.

Thanks again!

I shot a 200gr Hornady PSP and 50grs H4895 from my BLR with great accuracy. I shoot 47grs H4895 from my Ruger Hawkeye now, I have not worked up to 50grs yet. 47grs H4895+200gr PSP went 2380fps from my BLR, never chrono'd the 50grs load.

Good to hear. I had so-so accuracy with 200gr IMR-3031 and IMR-4064 so I bought some H-4895 hoping it may be the cure.

Now I'm going to try it and some W748 first.

I still have some PSPCLs loaded over Varget awaitng a range session so maybe Varget will be a player also.

So many load options, so little time.

DM - should I be using Magnum primers with the TAC? I've seen that Fed 215 or CCI250 are the preferred primers but don't see any mention of primers in your load data.

Thanks again - CsC

CsC,

My practise is to use the coolest primer that will give me good ignition. I actually use WLR primers (which are arguably the hottest of the large rifle primers) in my loads with the .358 Win. I don't see a problem in using either the F215 or the CCI250 with the load. You will get slightly more velocity, but also a little more pressure. Working up the load will verify the charge you need to use in your rifle.
