A Day With the 35s

BK,

Each of the .356s will put three rounds at 100 yards from the bench into 0.75 inches. I agree that it doesn't look traditional, but the difference between what I was shooting with Williams Peep Sights and glass sealed the deal for me. Note that the .375 still wears a Williams Peep Sight.

It is verification of the adage that "If you can't see it, you can't hit it."

I'm glad I'm not a bear. Those rifles are shooting nice and there's just something about a 35.
If you were to have only one 35 which caliber would you choose?
I know that's like asking which child you'd keep but would it be based on the caliber or the rifle itself?
Greg

Wow, Greg, that is a tough question. Emotionally, I'd keep a Model 94 chambered in .356. It is just such a pleasure to carry. Plus, I've taken some very large black bears (pushing seven foot), a fine mountain grizzly, elk and quite a few mule deer with a .356. It would be difficult to imagine being without one of these gracing my safe. On the other hand, the .358 is the easiest to load for. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I am speaking of the BLR or the Hawkeye, the cartridge just seems to shoot better than it should. I enjoy the Whelen and the 350, and each can shoot very well. Each has considerably more punch than the .358, but the little cartridge just shoots so consistently. So, emotionally, I'd take a .356. Practically, I'd take the .358. Now that is a straight-forward way of straddling the fence!

I just bought a 356 win. An original big bore!

Very nice rifle. I would like to have the same one, one of these days! Scotty

Blasphemy!!...and you call yourself a .35 aficionado.

Now, you are putting words in my mouth. I never called myself a .35 aficionado, (though I am). I pledge to buy a good 35 Remington soon.

He kind of has you there Mike. You are only missing the 35 Rem on the small side and a Norma on the big end to have a full house! Scotty

I started to build a 358 Norma last year, but bought the 35 Whelen instead. Does it count that I'm building a 9.3 X 64?

Nope! The 9.3 is really cool also though! 358 Norma is probably a kissing cousin to the 9.3x64 in all actuality!

For whatever it is worth, the Norma is on my "want" list.

Thats all that counts Mike!!! Just kidding ya about all them rifles. I think your 9.3 is going to be Canadian Killer. I would be it is going to knock stuffing out of animals. Scotty

A 358 Norma would be a fine addition to my growing collection. Hmmmm.

Mine too. That was my first idea for the Weatherby Vanguard I have, till I came up with the 257. Scotty

Thanks DrMike
That 356 does get the cowboy going in me. You have a neat collection and I wouldn't expect you to get rid of a one. My dreams are still about the 350 Ultramag. Trouble is "I HAVE TOO MANY DREAMS"
Greg

Yeah, dreams can complicate life. However, I would not want to live without dreams. I do love the Model 94 chambered in .356. It is a thumper, I can tell you.

Don't laugh Doc, but my 336 Marlin does very well with 200 grain .35 Remington bullets. Yes, it is short range (150 yards) but the deer and bear that have fallen to it speak wonders for the cartridge. It's still around after how many years. Easy to reload for and 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. My 336 was made in 1947 and has the original ballard rifling instead of micro groove. One of those rifles I just can't get rid of. (my first deer rifle).

I don't doubt it. The 35 Rem is a great cartridge that is seriously underrated. It is a great cartridge on deer and black bear, I know.

My 336 in 35 rem is one of my all time favorites. I have had no issue with it on deer and bear....I love shooting that rifle.
