OK, here is a good one!!! I'm having a custom rifle built in 416 Rem Mag. 20" barrell, stainless, express sights, not drilled/tapped, Mannlicher stocked. My premier hunting buddy says that I'm an extreme gluttin for punishment. He suggested that I get other input into my lunacy, and then consider a longer barrell with a standard stock configuration. What say you? Am I really looking to get "punished"? Or just a true believer in the term "custom"?

Basically what you are doing, is creating is a handier, lighter, more compact, short barreled blaster! I LIKE IT!!! My kinda gun! The difference in felt recoil between the two, would be more with the 20" barrel................Do you plan to have a muzzle brake? If not, you will get punished either way, with the 20" or the 24"..........For now, I will own my last months purchase of a 20" .375 Ruger Alaskan until about June. My neighbor (a Ruger addict), will then buy it (for what I paid out the door), after my new M1500 Howa .375 Ruger arrives at $400+ less, also with its 20" barrel.......I certainly understand the concept behind the shorter barrels and applaud them. Your 416 will certainly affect your shoulder more in the recoil dept. than the .375 Ruger has with mine! The muzzle brake and a good stock design will certainly reduce that punishment for you!!!.................Have some Ben Gay ready and have a blast!!! No weighted down (p_ssy) lead sleds are allowed!! LOL!!!!!

It would be nice but I am not really a carbine kind of guy in dangerous rifle calibers.

I had a Rem M700 .416 RM with a 20" barrel. Not Mannlicher stocked though! I didn't use a muzzle brake, but I added mercury tubes in the buttstock to improve the balance and bring the weight up to a reasonable number.

Also I know a PH in Africa who built himself one with that barrel length. If you measure an English double rifle you will find they are about the same overall length as the rifle you are planning.
