My wife and her friend who was an ex-cop ( she is a nurse now) planned to go target shooting this weekend with a special request; I bring along my 44 Mag Desert Eagle. I must admit I had move away from handgun reloading for quite sometime now... at least 15 years if I recall. I can't believe it has been that long. I have 200 rounds of 240 grain bullet for my 44 and around 500 rounds of 115 for the 9MM. I'm hoping they'll get tired shooting before I run out of ammo.

I have 296 for the 44 and WSF for the 9. Does any of you handgunner here have any experienced with those powder. It's the only powder I can find locally. I was looking for H110 and Bullseye but I can't find any.

Your help is greatly appreciated. I'll go now and clean my Dillon.

H110 and W296 are basically the same. Lots of speed and power in a 44 mag with 296 or H110. I use H110 for Nosler 200 JHP and got great results, so I can only assume 296 will have the same results.

Nosler #6 lists the following for 296 and a 240gn Nosler bullet:

Min - 22.8 (most accurate) @ 1370fps
mid - 23.3 @ 1410 fps
Max - 23.8 @ 1450 fps

Can't help you with the 9mm

Forgot to mention, both 296 and H110 will produce outstanding muzzle flame. Under low light conditions it's awesome to see the flame.

Yup, I've been able to interchange H110 and W296 data over the years. Have heard it's exactly the same stuff.

Don't know if that's true or not, but both work the same in heavy loads for the 44 mag, very well.

DF,

I load my 44 Mag with H110. I did use AA #9 for a while but went back to H110. Rich is right, W-W 296 and H110 are the same.

I have 200 rounds of Federal Brass all prep and ready to go. Is regular large pistol primer okay? I probably have about 800 Winchester Large Pistol Primers. I'm hoping no misfires on these 15 year old primers.

Thanks for all the help gentlemen.

Yes, the WLP will work fine, in fact that is what I use to ignite 28 or so gns of H110 in my 200gn 44mag loads.

DF

I have used CCI 300 Large Pistol primers in my 44 Mag to ignite both H110 and AA #9 with no problems.
You should be fine.

Not to say that the fairer sex can't take it, but it's too bad you couldn't find some HS-6. It's a bit faster than H110 or 296, and makes for a real nice plinking rounds without the harder recoil. Of course your still shooting heavy slug so there's still good recoil, just not as much.

DE recoil ain't too bad. Last time I went shooting with the wifey she was able to handle the recoil after the intitial shock, although the hammer spur did graced her forehead on the first shot. After that she was fine.

DF, here's the load I use in my Ruger Vaquero 44 Mag:

Winchester brass
Winchester large pistol mag primers
Nosler 240gr bullet
23.5gr 296.

It puts them all in one hole at 25 yards.

Book max is 24gr. Never tried 24gr. 23.5 was plenty still, and the accuracy was so good I decided it was a good place to stop.

Thanks for all the info. I should be picking up my Super Blackhawk tonight, so I will start loading for it this week. I have some H110, and will probably pick up some WW cases and either 240gr Nosler or Hornady bullets. Want to get something decent for it, just to start getting used to it. Scotty

Congratulations on the new Ruger SBH. Both the Nosler and Hornady 240 gr bullets are good. Make sure you put a good roll crimp on your loads.

Thanks Jim. I haven't loaded for pistol rounds in a long time, well revolver rounds, so it will be kinda new to me. I am kinda looking forward to it though. I would like to never have to shoot factory in anything but rimfires from here on out. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Should be a fun gun. Scotty
