I was able to hunt WT Deer does in a special early doe season here in my county this weekend and took the Marlin 1895 Guide for an evening hunt.
The 45-70 was loaded with the new Nosler 300 gr Ballistic Silver Tip over 59.0 grs H322 in a R-P case and a Federal GM210M primer. MV is 2050 fps and accuracy is sub .5" making it perfect for hunting WT deer in the thick woods.
I shot a doe at 70 yds as she quartered towards me. The big 300 gr BST entered the back of her rib cage and she made a 100 yard death run and I heard her crash.
I recovered the 300 gr BST in the off hind quarter after taking out a lung and the liver. It weighs 262.0 grs and expanded to.892" diameter. Total penetration was 26-28".

Great performance with that bullet. Congratulations on a fine harvest, Jim.

JD - Way to go - Congrats on some great eating !

That sounds like a great combo for the thick woods - That bullet I would say more than did it's job after 26+ inches of penetration.

The Nosler 300 gr BST is a very accurate bullet. I put on a new scope on my 1895 Guide gun and did a rough zero at 50 yds. I moved to 100 yds and my first shot was high so I made and adjustment and put the next 3 shots into .400". I made one more adjustment to get where I wanted to be. The first shot was me and went slightly to the right.

Jim, My wife is sitting here and just looked at me and flat said "NO" while I was looking at this. For this year at least. That thing seems to be shooting very well, and sure sounds like it did the number on that doe!

Jake,

Tell your bride that guns are like golf, you can't play the game with one club!

You NEED a 1895 Gide gun in 45-70 for hunting deer and elk in the black timber and when you come to MI to hunt WT deer with me.

Great target, Jim. That allows bragging rights for anyone producing such a target. You are making me want to pick one of those up.

Mike,

A Marlin 1895 Guide 45-70 would really complement your battery of lever rifles!

The 45-70 is a hammer with the upper limit loads too.

All I have shot were very accurate. I nearly sprang for the 1895 Cowboy last spring. Maybe I'm sorry I didn't go ahead. It will give me something to look forward to.

The 1895G and the other 1895's are some fun rifles. I never thought I would like to shoot a lever as much as I like my 1895G. It is very accurate and the 45-70 is just a really cool, old school round. It gets the works done so much differently than high speed rounds. Pushing a 300-525gr bullet is pretty neat too. Plus, those Marlins are some really nice carrying rifles. Can't wait to get mine bloody. Scotty
