450 Marlin

Well I'm back in the lever action lovers group again. This Marlin 1895 XLR is pretty and it shoots nice. I was a little surprised that the velocity of the 24 " barrel was not much greater than the 20" barrel on the Win mod. 94 Timber in 450 I used to have. Hornady 350 gr. FN with Win WLR primer and 58 gr. of H322 gave me 2131 FPS. VS 2086 FPS. The Leverevolution load was 2087 FPS vs 2045 FPS. No accuracy results yet but soon.

Yep, the longer barrel doesn't help as much with a straight case.

My handloads gained 170 fps when I switched from the 18.5" Marlin Guide Gun to the 22" Marlin 1895. That's with the .45/70 though.

Okay - dug up my notes - not real tough - I keep 'em in a three-ring binder.

350 gr Hornady FNSP, 50 gr H4198
18.5" barrel = 1946 fps
22" barrel = 2120 fps

That's the 174 fps difference between my two rifles. The ammo was actually loaded for the short barrel ported Guide Gun, then I ran it over the chronograph with both rifles. Same ammo. Different rifles. Different day.

I traded the 18.5" Guide Gun for the standard model 22" 1895 Marlin.

Subsequent loading of the 350 Hornady over a different lot of H4198 is producing around 2080 fps rather than the 2120 fps. This 50 grain load feels pretty stout - but it's interesting that Hodgdon lists 54 grains as max for the Marlin lever gun, producing nearly 2200 fps! I haven't felt any burning desire to load to that level...

Guy, that is to funny "I haven't felt any burning desire to load to that level" Now that is experience talking, sometimes you just know better because of feel and past experience. I think that is a very wise and safe attitude but it still was funny :lol: :lol:
