I recently purchased a box of your new 500 grain .458 FN solids for use in my 450 Dakota.

In my barrel they engage the rifling at 3.876 which is too long to fit in the magazine.

I have to back off over 0.090 to 3.785 for a reliable magazine box fit.

They cycle through the action just beautifully at this OCL. Better even than a RN solid!

Do I need to worry about having such a large jump to the rifling? (I would normally back off 15/thousands or 30/thousands as your reloading books recommend).

This OCL does not permit a crimp. The case neck comes just to the bottom of the crimping groove. I guess it would have to be seated 0.135 deeper for the neck to engage the crimp groove.

The bullet is so long I did not want to decrease powder capacity by seating it any deeper.

How do you seat this bullet in the 450 Dakota and 460 Weatherby?

Thanks, Andy

Andy,

I shoot a 338 RUM. I have quite a bit of free bore and I do not crimp my bullets. I get great accuracy and the buttets in the magazine do not move in the case.
Give the solids a try and let us know how they work.

PS, I am getting 2360 fps at 45 degrees F with 96 grains RL-15. This is similar to what I would get with other (conventional) 500 grain bullets. About all the recoil I can handle.

I would still like to hear from Nosler about how to secure the bullet in the case. Do I seat it deeper?

This bullet was obviously designed for 458 Win mag only. Am curious why the brochure says it has multiple locations to crimp?

Without a cannelure to crimp behind, it does migrate slightly by shot #3. Not a good thing for a dangerous game rifle. I shot my elephant at 9 paces.
