You can use either Hodgdon or the IMR 4895 in the 338 Win.
If you go to the Hodgdon site and check out their reloading data, you`ll see that from the 160 grain bullet up to and including the 250 grain, either one or both 4895 powders are listed.
For the 275 and 300 grainers, no 4895 is listed. Only the slower burners.
No reason why you can`t try either 4895 (where listed) using the 250 grainers and lighter.
You will not quite get the velocities of the slower burners, but you can still use the 4895.
I might consider it for 180gr bullets. H4350 is my first choice for 200gr bullets, and H4831 for 250gr bullets. Both 4350 and H4831 work well with 225 bullets.
I shoot 200gr BT and 210 gr PAR bullets in my 338win mag and Imr 4350(max75grs) out does RL19(max 78grs) by 90FPS and BOTH give excellant accuracy. Those were the top 2 powders I tested.
I agree with the pick or RL-19,
But I recently got some great results with V-N160. I put some 225gr acubonds into very tight groups.
It also dis quite well with the 200 grain aacubond.
I think that will be my elk load this year...tj3006
