I am looking to pick up a new rifle in a 6.5 caliber. I know the 6.5 PRC is very much in vogue these days, but I am also considering the Weatherby 6.5 RPM and the Weatherby 6.5-300. I love Weatherby Accumarks so I am leaning towards the Weatherby calibers. I think the 6.5-300 may be overkill so I am taking a very serious look at the 6.5 RPM. This rifle would be used for mule deer hunts out west. If anyone is shooting and/or hunting with the 6.5 RPM I would appreciate your thoughts on this cartridge. I would be using the Barnes 127 grain LRX bullet.

Any feedback is appreciated!

I have a 6.5 CM, 6.5 Swede, 6.5 PRC, and 2 264 Wins. My brother shoots a 6.5x300 Wby. The 6.5 RPM sits in a great spot. Little less than a 264 and a little more than a PRC. With the 127 LRX I’d think 3250 should be normal and put you in a great spot for an excellent game getter.

Darned near like a good 270 Win :ROFLMAO:

I haven't got one but the 6.5 RPM makes a lot of sense. A bit more power than a 6.5 PRC but much better barrel life than the big 6.5/300. Petersen makes the brass so it's good stuff, buy enough to last the life of the barrel and you'll be set. Out of all the Weatherby cartridges that one makes the most sense to me and the one I'm most likely to get.

I have several 6.5's (260rem, 264wm, 6.5-300wby) and was seriously thinking about the RPM at one point and wouldn't hesitate to get one if the right opportunity came up.

If I had a choice (actually do) I'd go (and have since '76 @ 11yo) 264wm. It has been and will always be my favorite! The next 26cals I've bought in order of succession is ......6.5gren then 6.5creed, then 260rem and finally 6.5prc. I prefer the 260 over the creed!
