6.5 Creedmoor

I thought the #2 Shilen I ordered would only make up into 24", which was OK with me. I was surprised when he said it was 26". Hey, I can always have it cut shorter....not so easy to "add" length, right? ha I'm really looking forward to playing with this thing. The rock chucks will be out in a couple months!

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a very attractive caliber and i'd love to have one. A good friend of mine has one that is a custom that he built and it will flat out shoot. He's one several matches with that rifle and claims it shoots so well that it's boring to reload for. I can't imagine that! Maybe one day i'll own one and find out.

It was an easy decision for me as I wanted a good, mild but snappy coyote/deer rifle and just used my Mod 7 custom. With a new Shilen barrel and muzzlebrake I was still out less money than buying a 26" bbl Ruger all weather. Now, for the same money I could bought either a Savage or a Vanguard but I really was tired of the 22-250 Ackley in my Mod 7, ha. Good luck to you, but check out the Savage, ugly but priced right, and yes, they are ugly. Did I mention "ugly"? ha

Beauty is as beauty does. Likewise, ugly is as ugly does. If it shoots, I can live with ugly. Hey, I even own a few Remingtons!

Went to the range with this 6.5 Creedmoor today and my BAR 270. Of course, I couldn't find my little adapter for the end of my Dewey rod, so just used EeezOx and a Bore Snake for initial barrel breakin on the Creed. Barrel is great, easy to get .5" groups with the factory 120 Amax. I had replaced the leupold 2.5x8 on my BAR 270 with a Bushnell 3200 2x7. I zeroed it with some discontinued Federal 110 TTSX I have. It shoots these rounds like a Match Load! Dialed it right in. The Creed was not ejecting smoothly, have a couple of bad burrs inside the action that is catching the fired brass and dragging bad. Dropped the rifle off at the Smith's. I feel like this little Creedmoor is just right for deer!

Smith fixed it right up! Seems in that Mod 7 action ( which is just a tad shorter than the Mod 700 short action) that fatter, sharper shoulder of the Creed case was "dragging" into the locking lug raceway edges. This wasn't a problem with the 22-250 Ackley as it was small enough in that area and shorter so only the neck went into the raceway. A bit of judicious honing on those sharp edges and it is slick as snot now! Hot dog. I am really getting excited about this little round. I do like the fact that I was able to go with the longer 26" bbl though. I'm thinking I can get the 100PT,100Amax, 100BT really humming with R17.

You aren't kidding. Sounds like a super combo Jim. I dig that little 6.5 CM. Can't wait to see some targets.

You're going to keep on messing around until I get my Creedmoor out and do some serious shooting! Man, that stimulates the desire to bang the steel.

Everytime I've ever had a new barrel shoot within .5" in ten rounds...I "know" it's a shooter! As I've mentioned before, in that 6.5/284 I never used anything bigger than the Nosler 125PT, and the 120BT was even better! I don't know what I would ever need a 140 anything for, although the 130 AB looks like it would be sweet. I'm thinking there isn't a mule deer alive that can handle that 100PT around 3200+!

No kidding! I may actually mount a scope on mine! LOL

And which scope would that be, Kurt? Good to see you posting. (y)

I bought a VX3 4.5-14x40 for it, but who knows what will actually get used...

Thanks, Doc!

...maybe a 6.5X20 30mm tube??? Probably appreciate that extra elevation adjustment... (y)

Both of the 6.5-20x 30mm VX3s I have are already spoken for on varmint rifles. My Creedmoor is one of the original 26" barreled Hawkeyes, so I don't really want to over-scope it, though if I had the coin I'd love to drop a 3-18x VX6 on it.

I'm trying out a Burris Timberline 4.5x14x32 AO (very small package, 11.3" long, 15oz) on my Creedmoor. It also has the BDC reticle. It puts a little bit of weight between your hands, but sure makes this rifle handy. So far it has been very good in focus, parallax, and adjustment. Only the windage dial has been off spec in that it takes 12 clicks/per inch BUT it stays there once its dialed in. Since I don't touch my scopes once I've zeroed them I don't mind, but I am keeping an eye on it. :)
