We just finished building a Custom 6.5x284.- Rem700,Schneider Barrel T8
28", Pillar bedded, jewell bench trigger.- On the initial tests we got a .236 "group CC at 100 yds. There`s a member in our club that says that
all groups should be shot at 200yds to be representative.
Why do we always test our rifles for groups at 100yds??????
good question? what do you think :?:

The load for the .236:
Berger 140vld
Norma Cases
H4831SC
CCI br

Whenever possible I use the longer ranges that way I know for sure what the load/rifle does. If not you can only guess.

For sure POP but why do we always measure our groups at 100 and not 200?
We always talk what our rifle does at 100yds or not?

100 yards has become the standard.
One of the main reasons is not everybody has access to 200 yard ranges. Especially close to the cities.

If you had ever helped at a annual "Hunter Sight in", where we open our range to the public, you would understand why for alot of folks, 100 yards is plenty far.

In addition, alot of people think 200 yards is too far to walk to check targets.

Cheap spotting scopes work better at 100 yards.

and, because it's what Granddad did!

Antelope Sniper for sure thats an awnser, thats the way Granddad did it.
Up there you have very nice or one of the nicest open spaces in US.
Very long,long shots.
For sure I will continue with my groups at 100 to evaluate the potential of the rifle and will try to shoot some groups a lil farther.

I haven't got a clue as to how any of my rifles shoot at 100 yards. The local public range has concrete benches set up at 200 yards and that is the only place I shoot. I'd much rather shoot farther but rifle ranges on Long Island are far & few between.

They do have 100 yard points but the benches are old wooden jobs and are a little shaky. It cost $18 every time you walk into the place so they could afford to do some improvements.

As far as I know there is only one 300 yard range and it is only operational from 5pm to 7pm on Saturdays in the summer. Real convenient, huh?

Most deer at killed at 100yds or less so a 100yd zero makes sense for the average hunter. I think 100yds is a doable range in most areas, especially near any major cities. Our hunt club has 100/200/300yds available only because a couple of us were willing to do the clearing necessary and then build the benches. Cut off telephone poles for the legs, three feet into the ground and the bench built with treated 2x6s. Works well. Even with that only three of us ever shoot beyond 100yds.Rick.

I recently took a ride to the Jim Thorpe, PA area where they have a 300 yard public range. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the entire facility had just been refurbished. New berms, higher & wider. New target holders made of self healing rubber of some kind. And the best part of all - PA public ranges are FREE!

It's merely a double check for the most part. The other part is, sometimes bullets arent fully stabilized until a little farther down range. At the typical 100 yd mark, bullets not having reached the "sleep" point wouldn't really matter much, but may have some influence farther down range.
Once I find an accurate load at the shorter range, I always check my final settings at longer range, both mid range and the end of my desired PBR setting. Just to make sure as POP said

Believe me, if it weren't for the gale winds we put up with here in Wyoming all my guns would be shot at 200-400 yards pending on caliber. Sometimes we have to deal with 60 mph...no kidding.

60MPH, at 300yds,400,500.....for sure you have to compensate a lot.
well you have to practice a lot more
