I am shooting a colt sporter with a 20" - 1/9 twist barrell. According to your posted information, using IMR 4198 powder, the most accurate load is 19.0 grains of powder and around 2807 f/sec. With my rifle, because of barrell length, I get around 2807 f/sec using 20 grains of 4198. Your reloading data does not tell me what twist your test rifle was. With my 1/9 twist, am I shooting this bullet to fast in order to stabilize this bullet. Some people say that the faster twist barrells causes the bullet to spin to fast, thus making it unstable. In your opinion, what it the optimal velocity to shoot this bullet out of my 1/9 twist barrell?

Thanks,

Don, just a suggestion, try asking this question in "Reloading". There are some very knowledgable folks there. You may get a quicker answer

223 Rem? I push 60 grainers around 3450 with Varget in my 22-250 with a 12 twist. I would guess Varget would be an excellent powder also in a 223 pushing a 60 grainer upwards around 3100 fps.

Too much twist will not cause a bullet to destabalize. If you have insufficent twist, then you bullets will not properly stabalize. If you overtwist a light bullet, it is possible to cause them to come apart in mid air. An example of this would be old 100gr Hornady bullets in a 30.06 rifled for 220gr slugs.

The 1-9 twist was originally designed for the 62gr SS109 slug loaded in M855 Nato spec rounds. Consequenly your 1-9 twist barrel is about optimum for shooting the 60gr partitions. With a max load of imr4895, Win brass, and CCI match primers, my 16" bushy shoot the 60gr partitions into 1/2" groups when I do my part.

You cannot overstabilize a bullet, the worst thing that could happen is a tad les velocity and a lil more expansion due to the increased spin.

You might want to check out the newest Hornady manual. There is seperate loading data for the AR15.
