7mm-08 140 AB or 140 E-Tip?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, but...

I have a great load for my 7-08 using Big Game and 140 Accubonds. I see from the most recent Ramshot data that they're pushing the 140 E-Tip at 2870 (24" barrel) with 47.5 grains of BG. Subtract 50 from the MV for my 22" Tikka and the velocities are very close.

If accuracy and velocity were equal, which bullet would you choose?

P

I would choose the AccuBond since it will work near or far, the E Tip would make a great close - medium range load but I do wonder how much it would expand at long range at 7mm-08 speeds.

Ballistics calculator gives 1944 ft/sec at 500 yards for the E-Tip started at 2800 ft/sec, well above the expansion min of 1800 ft/sec.

P

I would not be fearful of either of those bullets. The AB will work quite well, but the E-Tip works equally well. Perhaps I'd use the AB more often than the E-Tip, but only because it seems easier to find ABs than to find E-Tips.

What's the intended quarry?

I can't speak for the E-tips because I've never tried them, seems their really hard to find around here. On the other hand i've worked up some really accurate loads in several different calibers with the accubonds and their on game performance has been excellent for me at all distances.

Deer and elk.

And before someone questions my choice of chambering, be advised that I have a 4x4 Roosevelt in the freezer from last year courtesy of this rifle.

No ones going to question that around here buddy. We back each other around this place. Matter of fact my son will likely use his 7x57 with 150 PTs for them puny Eastern Oregon elk this Fall if the draw is good to him.

What with 180 grain ABs bouncing off of elk and 165s barely penetrating mule deer, I'd sure be careful about using that 7-08 with 140 ABs for anything larger than a ground squirrel. I've used a lot of 140 grain bullets in my .280s for many years. I can't recall seeing anything walk away from them when I did my part. One of my hunting partners used a 7mm 08 with 145 Speer HotCors to take moose, elk and mule deer. Do your part, and the 7-08 will stand you in good stead.

Yeah, those little "dry side" elk are easy to kill...

I would go with the AB as it will expand more at the lower velocities.

My Tikka T3 got one hole groups using the Barnes 110gr TTSX and 49.5grs of RL15 with Ave 3329FPS and SD 5. The 110gr bullet will work fine in the 7mm-08 as you need to push the non-lead bullets fast to work best or at all. The non-lead bullets work like a lead core 30% heavier. So a 110gr non-lead bullet acts like a 143gr lead core bullet and expands better than a 140gr non-lead bullet.

AB...etip is to heavyily a constructed bullet for a 7-08 for anything but the bigger stuff up close.

since your on the wet and brushy side, it probably doesn't really matter a whole lot!

No argument from me. I'll be toting a 7-08 this year for elk, but will be using 150 NBT's.

Personally, I don't trust expanding mono's all that much and also think they should start above 3K.

Of your two, I'd go NAB and not look back.

I've taken 3 elk with the 165 NAB from my 308. They work.

But a Partition is always my first choice...
