I have a 7mm Mauser war rifle and I want to load 140gr.Nosler BT with IMR 4831 powder at 49grains. My question is which COAL should I use? The Nosler load data here on line says to use Maximum3.065"COAL and the Hodgdon reload data on line says to use 3.000" for the 140 gr. Nosler Bt. Which one should I go with for this old war rifle?

I would check to see if the longer COAL functions in your rifle, and how far from the lands you are actually seating. With the BT's seems like .010-.050 should be within accuracy node. I imagine you could find an accurate load at either depth. Good luck, put some pictures of your groups up. the 7x57 is a cool cartridge. Scotty

If you have one of the 95 Mauser military rifles you will not be able to get close to the lands with a 140 gr bullet. They have a throat a mile long for the 173 gr RN bullet that was the original specification military round. I would load the bullet as long a COL as will work through the magazine and see how it shoots. If it does not come up to your accuracy wants then load a ladder test of a few loads in 10 thousands shorter COL at a time to see if accuracy improves. One thing I have found that improves accuracy greatly with these old military rifles that have long throats that you can't get the bullet with in a mile of the lands is to use a Lee Factory Crimp Die. It helps hold the bullet in the case for that millisecond it needs to build the pressure up just like the bullet running into the lands and is retarded that millisecond before it leaves the case with shorter throats. All I know is that it works for me. If you still have the 29" barrel on a M-95 Mauser you should get around 2700 fps with your load. I have always gotten really good accuracy in the 7mm Mauser with IMR 4350

Thanks fellows. I've got a German made Mauser with a 24" barrel. Right now I'm loading 140 grain Nosler BT'S with IMR 4831 powder at 49 grains to give me roughly 2700FP. I've got some 150 grain Nosler BT'S which I am going to load later on with IMR 4350 powder. I'm going to try a few different coal to see which my rifle likes the best.
