So, I have this 7 mag that I built to shoot 180 grain bullets. Along the way I'm thinking maybe I'd like to use this to hunt my home state of California. If anyone would be so inclined to run my setup through Quickload, I'd appreciate it. 26" barrel, 139gr Barnes LRX at 3.400" OAL. I'd assume a 140gr E-tip would be very similar? I'm also interested in the 150gr E-tip and the 168gr Barnes LRX. I have a lot of H1000 and I think I need to get some RL26, maybe some 7828ssc? Oh, I forgot...65,000psi would be fair game as far as I'm concerned. Thanks

Is 65,000 a typo? Saami list the 7 Rem mag cartridge max at 61,000 psi (420 MPa)... or did you mean 7 RUM?

I didn't see anything for the 139gr LRX in QL. If you take some measurements I can make a bullet profile for it.

No 65,000psi wasnt a typo. No biggy. It's a belted mag. "Normal" cartridges are rated at 63,000psi so??? 140 E-tip is probably close enough to the 139gr LRX. I always start low and work up in small increments with a chronograph and I know what to look for.

25-06 is rated at 63,000psi. I understand being cautious, in this case 61,000 is overly so. I routinely shoot reloads in several. 243's that are predicted in quickload to be above the 60,000psi rating of that cartridge. No problems and not even loose primer pockets after 4-5 firings.

It doesn’t matter what another cartridges max saami is... it’s illogical to think that one cartridge is safe at xx,xxxx because another cartridge has been rated at xx,xxx. And a max Saami psi isn’t created by taking samples from other cartridges. It’s set for a pretty good reason. Why flirt with exceeding it?

You’re asking fellow reloaders to disregard safe practices and take a pretty big step into the red. It’s putting a lot at risk for both the person posting the QL and to whoever comes across the thread. So it’s not just you, but the folks that skip through the talk and just go to the numbers. It’s a liability.

If it’s a common practice for you to go beyond saami, I’d suggest investing in your own copy of QL.

OK, feel free to not help? I'm going to do what I'm going to do regardless of your opinion, but thanks for the concern.

No dog in this really, but most of us usually use QL to see what the top end looks like on paper. If I run 65K stuff for someone, I usually just send a PM. Also, the 25-06 is a 65,000PSI cartridge by SAAMI and the 30-06 is a 58,000 PSI cartridge. Same for the 270 Winchester being a 65K cartridge. All the same case..

The Win Mag case is the same, whether it is a 300 Win, 264, 338, etc.. I don't typically shoot for a working load to be at 65,000 with any cartridge, but QL does give a good idea of what we should be looking for at an absolute top end.

I also expect someone to work up their handloads safely and know the process. If a monkey jumps on a forum, grabs some internet data, picks the 65K load and locks up his gun then he is a darned idiot anyhow and would have hurt himself using the same data using 61K max eventually.

Not disagreeing with the caution stated here, but we do have to apply the common sense factor to how we load!

And honestly, working from 61K to a top end 65K load isn't all that big a deal. It is there, but you aren't talking 100's of FPS from anything I have seen.

Thanks SJB358, I found the 150gr E-tip data I was looking for. You had posted it in 2015! I couldn't find any 140gr E-tip data though. My best guess is that max loads would be a couple grains higher than the 150gr across the board.

Shoot me a reminder and I will try and run them this evening.

I ran this under the CIP rating of 62K'ish and a 3.400 COAL for you DesertCJ. I also adjusted it to spit out .25 increments, so if you wanna see the 65K speed, just avert your eyes lower on the chart!

Hope that helps you out.

I also sorta think you can see what I meant about the last 4K PSI.. To me as I look at the tables, it looks like you can gain about 40FPS on average going from 61K to 65K, some a bit more, but even 50 FPS isn't really a big deal. I always sorta let the flat spot tell me what the gun wants and let it eat.

Yes! Thank you so much! That really fills out the picture for me. I probably won't even be able to blow myself up though? Lol, just kidding. As always, I will be starting low and working up slowly. Probably 1 grain at a time with these amounts of powder. In 308 size cases, I use .5gr steps.

You’ll be good and it looks like the numbers are falling about where we were thinking.

Yeah, 7828ssc is looking a bit surprising to me. I knew it was good and I already have some, but it looks to be just as good as RL26 here!

I am currently using 72.8 grains of Retumbo and 160 Accubonds and its moving nicely at 3,140 fps with a 26 inch barrel without pressure signs. I got to 3,170 fps when i saw pressure, so backed off for accuracy. Do not use this load without working up. RL-26 and 7828 is indeed great powders, just have not tried them yet.
