I have a question and I need a good solid answer. Can I reload 140 gr. CT ballistic silvertip bullets into winchester cases using 50 grains of IMR 4064 powder?

First off welcome to the forum sir.

I am sure you will enjoy the company here.

You should be ok with that load. However e-mail me and I will run quickload for you just to make sure.

However unless you have a couple of pounds that you need to get rid off at the range, this powder burning rate is nowhere near ideal for the 7 mag.
It might give you accuracy but your velocity will never be what the 7 was designed for.

Dear pop
Thanks for the info on using 50 grains of IMR 4064 powder with the load I had mentioned. I have 2 lbs. of 4064 powder that I want to use up.
I live here in Alabama and I plan on using this load to shoot deer and coyotes from 100 yds. and below.,

Well I will run quickload tonite for you tonite. It usually does a pretty good job of predicting velocity and more importantly pressure!

I can tell you off hand though that 4064 will work much better with lighter bullets (like 90-120gr) as opposed to 140 gr. Anyway I will post results tonite.

OK quickload predicts for 50 grains:

2747 feet per second

at 42560 psi.

Your max would be 58 grains of 4064:

3095 feet per second
at 62105 psi.

These are predictions but I found the program to be
quite accurate.

Take a look at RL22 for the 7mm Rem Mag.

Hi POP:
I don't have access to the Quickload program any more, but when I did, I learned not to trust the pressure calculations.

If there isn't any data in a loading manual using IMR 4064, in the 7mm RM, I wouldn't even risk it.

Using a powder in a case that it's not designed for can create problems, and I've found that to be true, (Scarr"ry).

That said, I found loads using IMR 4064 with 2 or 3 bullet weights, in the Sierra Manual and from IMR.

Like you said, it isn't ideal but it should work.

I have heard this many times however I have yet to see it in my experience. Quickload is a guide, a reference point if you will just like any other loading manual. Nothing out there is a panacea! This is why I ....

There is no danger in this method at all if you practice this. Everything it qoutes is a suggestion for me. I verify it myself.

Remington's 7mm mag is one of my all-time favorite hunting cartridges. I generally load it with heavier bullets and slower powder, but I checked a couple of manuals. My OLD Nosler manual has a range of 52 - 56 grains of IMR 4064 and a 140 grain bullet. My Sierra manual has a range of 47.5 gr to a max of 59 grains, for their 140 grain bullets.

Looks like your proposed 50 grain load is just fine, on the light side of 7mm mag loads.

I can add that a hot loaded 140 does a bang-flop job on coyotes... Kind of messes up the hide a bit though...

Wal, shore. Just don't let Quickload make you overconfident.
