I have a friend that might want to trade me a 300 remington ultra mag for my winchester model 70 7mm wsm. The 300 rum is brand new. Would this be a good trade or not? and is the 300 rum a good round? Thanks

What model 70 for what make and model 300 RUM?

The 300 RUM is an awesome round for big game and long range. It will be a couple steps up in performance over the 7mm WSM.

it is a model 70 black shadow. I am not sure of the 300 rum yet. What is the best load for a 300 rum?

Depends on what you are going to use the 300 RUM for.
A 180 gr PT will cover almost any hunting situation, A 200 gr AB will make it a true long range hammer on elk and moose.

I would be using this rifle on deer, elk, moose, bear. But I am wondering, how much are a good 300 rum usually running for these days.

If all you are looking at are the dollars and cents, then you probably won't find the deal very appetizing. You need to ask if you want to use the RUM, if you are comfortable with the calibre and can justify ownership. The 300 RUM is a good cartridge that will work on any game in North America. Having said that, the 7 mm WSM will work on any game in the lower 48 and most of the game in Canada and Alaska. Dollar wise, the trade will likely be sufficiently close to be fair. What should be important to you is whether you want a RUM.

I was wondering the price to see if the trade would be close to even as possible. But I use to have a 300 win mag and liked it, but I would just like something with more power then the 300 win mag.

the recoil shouldn't really bother me too much if I get a limbsaver and a muzzle brake if needed. Plus I am 5 foot 10 inches and weight 210.

A good recoil pad is all you shouldneed to tame the recoil of the 300 RUM.

I am not sure what model it is going to be yet. I hope it will be the remington model 700

I would take the 300 RUM in a heartbeat!

150 gr at 3600

180 at 3300

200 at 3150

Believe me it is all you need!

Hey POP, do you think you could get the quick loads for all three of those along with the 240 grain match king? Thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure a rem 700 is worth more then a winchester black shadow model 70, but I could be wrong. I think it boils down to if your happy with the outcome. Thats what trading is all about. Its not about the face value, its what its worth to YOU. If you feel your getting a good deal and you like the rifle and would put it to good use then you would be getting a good deal even if you paid a little more for your rifle.

I personally think the RUM line of cartridges are way more then the average hunter needs. The average guy cant shoot them as accurate as the lesser rounds so it would do them no good. The RUM's however do excell at LR shooting/hunting. If your wanting to get into that, the 300 RUM is great with 200g AB's or 210g VLD's or 220-240g smk's.

Theres really nothing wrong with the 7 WSM either though. With a 160g AB or 168g vld it will shoot just as far as a 300 RUM with a lot less recoil, but it wont have near the power either. An elk wont notice the difference out to sane ranges IMO. Ask yourself how many oppurtunities do you have to shoot animals past 600 yards???

If it was me, I'd look and see if you can tolerate the recoil first, then ask yourself what you really want out of the cartridge/rifle.

The RUM's are great calibers dont get me wrong, but IMO they are a little much inside 600 yards and I would venture to say that most people can get within 600 yards 80% of the time.

The ranges that I can shoot here in Reed Point can range anywhere from 25 yards to pretty much as far as your rifle can shoot accurately.

Even if it an SPS it is worth it! as long as it has a 26" tube that is.

What would the best 300 rum be? besides being custom. And what is the worst 300 rum that has been made?

I believe remington only chambers the .300RUM in the M700... short of the custom shop.

The .300 RUM is the one stop shop does all. Remington has a cool little blurb on their site with their power-level Ammo.
