I have decided to build a custom 8mm Rem Mag for next seasons hunt with a 27" barrel and a friend which has one said that I can get over 3100fps (his averaging 3120fps) with a 220gr Sierra SBT and this will be my long range round for gas lines, large open fields and out west. Started the process yesterday and will be working out the details over the next two months so we can begin the build after the 1st of the year.

Here is the reason I will be doing this as you can see below on the Hornady Hits calculator the reasons for it being long range round on big game.

8mm Rem Mag 220gr bullet at 600yds is still moving at 2110 - NEED I SAY MORE?
Game weight that can be taken at 600yds 1397 pounds

Mike, I am all for the 8mm Rem Mag and any custom build, but man, don't you already get 3000 from your M700, from a 24" barrel? That seems pretty AWESOME to me. Just wondering, never would I question another wanting to build another rifle.. The 8RM is a beast. The more I look at the ballistics, the more I like it.

I do wish you a ton of luck with your build. That would be a rifle that would be very happy glassing ridges for elk!

Yes, the one i have is cool but I like real cool and going to take the leap and work it out one step at a time and really bring the 8mm Rem mag up to it's potential. Not sure of all the particualars but will find and use a 700 long action. As we work out the details I will let you all know what it will be. Yes, from ridge to ridge is what I am thinking with the 8mm Rem Mag custom, a real AT&T type situation,

REACH OUT AND TOUCHEM  And when my wife says why I am blaming FOTIS and YOU SCOTTY, you all kind of got me going.

Only a question????? why not the .338Edge a lil more of gud stuff.

Mike,

Congratulations on the new project, should be a winner for sure.

I am not questioning your decision, just curious why not a 338? Bullet selection from 180 gr to 300 grs would cover everything from mice to moose both near and far.

Knowing you, it will be an awesome rig.

2 8 maggies Mike?

Why not?

I smell an 8mm rum coming into play!

Yes FOTIS WELL PUT!!!

I want a flat shooting cartridge that is close to perfection with more than enough energy for whatever I would shoot without throwing a freight train size bullet down range or some light 180gr and I think the 8mm Rem Mag is as close to magnum perfection as one can get to do all that magnums can do and have it in one cartridge. It will shoot flat like the 300Rum and 30/378 and hit like a 338Rum or 340Wby giving me a perfect compromise between the 30's and 338 perfomance levels.

The Sierra 220gr for all long range work with a .521 BC is a perfect bullet unless Nosler or Berger decide to make a 220gr and then I would have to really think about it because how well the 220gr will kill game on long shots. Of course everyone with a 300 whatever or a 338 whatever will argrue for their favorite, because it is the one they bought or because they really believe it, but that proves my point, and anyway it is not a debate with me, I love the possiblities of the Big 8. The Big 8 has the powders now, the right barrel lengths and enough choice of bullets to make it what it should have been in the first place and on top of all of that not everybody and his brother has one, but I will, and I will truly have fun with it. I think it will be an eye opener once it is built and I put it through its paces and I believe some will be surprised at its out right performance level in flat trajectory and terminal results.

you got me thinking...........maybe......

Ran a hypothetical Quick load for the 8mm rem rum.

220 sierra at 3180 fps but with a 26" tube.

I knew it could do more but my friends accurate load was 3120fps but he does not get as anal on reloading as I do that is why I said you all will be surprised at its performance level. Where talking 4943ft pounds at muzzle and over 2600ft pounds at 500yds and over 2200ft pounds at 600yds and only a drop of 26.2" at 500yds with being 2.5" high at 100yds.

Mike,

Sounds like you have a well thought plan.
Can't wait to hear all the details.
The big 8 is going to be a precision surgical sledge hammer.

I really believe you have hit the nail on the head in my opinion, it will be flat enough to allow for placing your shot at long range right where you want it and time of flight will reduce wind drift also allowing for more accurate shot placement.

Ballistically a 30-8mm or a .338-8mm are better options. My .30-8mm has a 27" barrel and shoots 210's 3100fps. My .338 Baer (an improved version of a .338-8mm) will shoot 225gr bullets 3050-3100fps. Both are superior to a straight 8mm because of the bullet selection and higher BC.

I'm not trying to discourage you but I think there is a reason the 8mm never took off and that reason is bullet selection.

I know you are not trying to discourage me and I appreciate that and you haven't at all. I don't believe the above mentioned are that superior if they are by enough to change my mind, and the reason the 8mm Rem Mag never took off is not because of other cartridges but it was brought in at at time when the powders were not sufficient to allow it to preform and of course except for bullet choice I will have to prove my theories with real time data. Even if it is not the best or superior as you say it will still be the cats meow for me and in the end that is all that matters, me just having a ball. It will turn some heads and I know I will get it to really shoot well and that is a plus. What a killer it will be.

Mike I think it will be a very cool build. Can't wait to see the finished product.
