A little .308 ammo

As I've cleaned out the "gun room" I've found that I have stacks of "gun stuff" scattered about. Most of the bullets & brass made it to the garage, while most of the loaded ammo, all the primers, powder, etc, are stashed here in the house.

This is most of the .308 Win stuff. I think there's 57 boxes of mostly once-fired Federal brass, and a box full of I don't know how many factory ammo, handloads, and brass that's been fired... That's 1140 mostly once-fired brass and likely that much more in the box in various stages of factory, handload & needing to be reloaded? I'd guess there's at least 600 loaded rounds on hand.



Anymore I only put about 500 rounds a year through the .308 bolt action. Used to be 2,000+ a year for quite a few years. There's a reason that ol' Green Machine and I get along so well. Next barrel just might be fluted though, I'd like to cut the weight a tad. And get a suppressor. :mrgreen:



It's almost my favorite rifle. And I do like to feed it! Most of my other centerfire rifles have somewhere around 50 - 100 rounds loaded for them at any given time, and maybe 200 - 250 brass cases at most. Exceptions being the .204 Ruger & .223 Remington - they're also fairly high volume rifles.

Ok, that's pretty interesting... why were you putting 2000 rounds a year through it? And what type/build is that 308? Good looking in a "Grey Ghost" sort of way.

I was a sniper team leader on a regional SWAT team here in Washington, as well as a sniper instructor at the state SWAT-sniper school. Used that as a great excuse to load & shoot a lot of .308 Win.

Also got into NRA prone competition (sling up and shoot at 500 or 600 yards, or farther, depending) and did fairly well in some "tactical/practical" matches then too. All that added up to some great reasons to shoot a lot, so I did.

Also, for several years, this was the only center-fire rifle I had. So I used it for everything. SWAT, matches, varmint shooting and hunting.

It's a pretty straight-up rifle, nothing fancy. Trued Remington short action. 24" Krieger barrel, 1:12 twist, with the 95 Palma chamber. Badger base & rings. Old 1" tube 4.5-14x Leupold. Remington trigger. Shown here in the original HS Precision stock from 20 years ago. I also have a McMillan for it, but she's a little heavier in the McMillan. I've found the McMillan is better for matches, but I like hunting with it in the HS Precision stock more.

Anymore I've got too doggone many rifles, and am too old & beat up for the SWAT team, so I don't shoot it as much.

She's been a good one though.

Love the old green machine, yours has been the inspiration for a few builds around here. 1140 brass plus your loaded rounds should keep you for a while.

The 308 win is a great calibre :wink:. The man that taught me everything about the outdoors as my parents could not afford it used nothing but a 308 win :mrgreen:.
When we could still group hunt I remember pushing a large bush with Colin on point as we pushed there were 7 shots & when we came out there were 7 deer down. We were allowed 3 tags back then, 1 buck & 2 doe. Colin was best shot I ever saw on game he just didn't miss but always knew the limit of the rifle he used.

I keep about 100 set aside for the BLR.

I could live with just the .308 Win.

Awesome history on the Green Machine. Sounds like you've got a very sweet relationship with that rifle, and rightfully so. My match gun is a factory Remington 5R in 308 with a Shilen trigger. I'm not sure if it is the 5R rifling, the stainless steel barrel or my pushing a 175 SMK at a modest velocity, but after 60 rounds during the match I have almost zero copper fouling. It has always left me scratching my head and smiling. It's my only Remington and my only stainless rifle and I'd have to say it has earned a special place with me. A fellow could do a lot worse than 308 for a one rifle battery. Thanks for sharing a little about your rig.
