Accubond or Partition for elk

Well said. I'm a PT guy through and through. I do like the 160gr AB in my 7WSM. My 264 really puts the stress on bullets at 10 yards in water jugs. The 140gr PT holds up really well versus the 130gr AB. Both would handle any deer but I would rather hunt elk with the PT load. It will penetrate. Again I like them both a bunch but the PT is my favorite. Scotty

And of course, none of us can know how many thousands of elk fall every year to plain jane "cup and core" factory bullets or inexpensive handloads...

A lot of guys hunt elk with good old soft-point factory ammo and do just fine. Tuck that expanding bullet behind the shoulder and go collect the meat & antlers... Yes, it can be that simple.

We sure do dote on our premium bullets here though - and I think for good reasons. Let's not forget that a decent standard bullet will do a fine job too. Reality check.

I'd hunt any elk with .30-06 180 gr soft point ammo from any of the major ammo makers, if it proved accurate from my rifle.

FWIW, Guy

Well said, and a great reality check indeed.

I think it all comes down to this hobby/love of reloading and shooting. Ask a computer geek(i use this with respect) about his computer and he doesn't tell you it's a Gateway or Dell. He talks about the access time of his hard drive and memory, his cooling system, video card engine and his Benchmark and 3Dmark scores. Ask a motorhead about his car and you get to hear about his tuned exhaust, cold air intake, performance chip, cam specs, and compression ratio.

We all know we can get back and forth to work in a Civic, Fusion or Corolla and that any mainstream PC will allow us to perform word-processing, internet browsing and e-mail.

I have no problem loading up C&C bullets when shooting Whitetails and Black Bear. But when faced with something a bit tougher like an Elk or Moose, I want to make sure the job gets done. Will the Core-Lokt, Power Point, Interlock, Gamehunter, Hot-Cor work? Yep. So does the Sentra. I just want to drive something else.

Well said CC.. Couldn't have put it any better. Scotty

my thoughts on this, the AccuBond and the Partition are equals in standard calibers, hoever the ballistic advantage goes to the AccuBond, in a magnum caliber they are also on equal footing unless, you have a high velocity impact on a heavy hard target (IE a bull moose or elk shoulder at 35 yards) Then is when the AccuBond shines, it may not exit, but it will get adequate penetration and hang togather.
I have read many reports from guys who develope cartridges of ungodly velocity, this is the partitions weak point, if the impact is violent enough to rupture the H-mantle of the Partition, penetration stops now, I know one smith (Kirby Allen) who had 120 gr partitions rupture in a gallon of water, at 500 yards shooting them from a 338 rum imp. necked to .257.

What was the muzzle velocity of that 25 caliber monster???
3800+fps,
and bullet believe what you wish, doesn't effect me, but I've saw a few failures from partitions and its always when the h-mantle ruptures. and I've dealt with no less than 20 different smiths, and every last one of them would lie to ya to make a buck, except kirby allen. a quote from kirby's report.
The only problem was the availability of premieum bullets that would handle the strain of this ultimate .257 cartridge. I tested the 115 gr ballistic tip and while velocity out of my 30" extreme sporter rifle was +3800 fps with groups in the .3'sat 100 yards and sub 2" groups at 500yards. On game performance was lacking. They made great varmint bulletseven out to +600 yardson coyotes as they practicly came unglued even at this range.
Tried the 115-120 gr partitions and they to produced fine accuracyvery close to the ballistic tip but in expansion tests, the Partition was ruptured on impacts out to 500 yards when shot into water.

Most have you have saw this, its a 160 .284 AccuBond that was shot into a green sugar maple tree with an impact velocity of 3520 fps, it expanded to .658 and still retained 63% of its original weight, the accubonds are tougher if you run them hard.

Very awesome performance RR. They are tough. I don't have anything that runs that hard so I think I'm okay! Scotty

I'd sure hate to be on the recieving end of that monster. As for the Partition its a great bullet. But it can produce some large exit wounds depending on velocity. That said it is time proven and will not let you down.
