I was able to grab a pound of Accurate 5744 at the local gunshop today. They had three cans, I considered buying all three but settled for one. A little later I saw a young fellow buy a can, and felt real good about leaving a couple there for others.

Its supposed to be good for 405 gr cast bullets and the 45-70 cartridge. I'll let you know! :) I haven't tried it before.

Anyone with experience with the 5744 and 45-70 loads?

Thanks, Guy

My C Sharps shoots well with a 405 magnus bullet and 26 grains with a light roll crimp.

Good to know. Thanks. :)

I've read good things about 5744 in the 45/70 but I haven't used it. Keep us posted on your load development.

Does anyone know how 5744 works with 300 gr bullets?

I’ve never used 5744 in my 45-70’s. I’ve heard many good things about it, but I can’t bring myself to use anything but 4198 in either IMR or Hodgdon flavors. I get such great velocity and accuracy that it’s all I load for them. From 300 to 420 grain bullets they all just about go through the same hole at 100 yards.

Danged big bore lever actions surprised me with their accuracy when I started messing with a 45-70 Marlin twenty years or so ago. I had no idea that they could produce such impressive accuracy!

H4198 has worked really well for me with the 45-70, and I've got a can of IMR4198 sitting here if needed. One of my buddies was getting away from handloading and gave me the IMR 4198 along with four pounds of W231 and a can of W296 - all unopened. What a good fellow! I offered to pay him, but nope. That W231 will get burned up in my 45 ACP. The 296 will go to the 44 magnum revolver.

At this point I have several different powders that work just fine in the 45-70. I haven't loaded any of that 5744 yet, but will report when I do so.

Before this primer crunch hit, 5744 was high on the list to do some testing in reduced loads. At some point I'll get around to it. I remember reading somewhere that it's an excellent powder for 45-70 in normal loads. Be interesting to see how it does for you Guy.

Nice with relatively reduced loads.

That's what I was thinking Fotis. I've got my rompin' stompin' 45-70 loads, but just something nice to shoot at the range for fun... So, I'll give it a try.

Amen Guy. I have a couple but my favorite is a Remlin 1895 with 22” barrel I bought new 4–5 years ago I think. It’s more accurate than I can shoot and she ain’t too hateful to look at to boot. People complain about their fit and finish but I can’t understand it. Maybe I got lucky but mine is perfect.

Mine is a Marlin 1895G ported. My best group with the 300 gr BST and H322 went .400" at 100 yards. It consistently shoots under MOA even at 250 yards! I haven't tried any other powders because it shoots so darn well. And the 300 gr BST is a hammer on deer.
