Always Take A Spare

When working up a new rifle or load I will now always take a spare rifle with me! I have busted my butt with a model 700 .270 for way too long and it was causing me to doubt everything I've ever learned about rifles! I changed scopes twice, changed loads with everything imaginable, changed my rest, just about anything you could come up with was tried. The gun would shoot a good group once, then flake out. I re-bedded several times and ways, did the full barrel cleaning routine, had my eyes checked and got new glasses! Finally lost all confidence in the gun and myself and that last part sucks! I took my 22-250 out and shot bugholes so maybe the recoil needed a different rest, what a joke, the 270 shot worse with different rests. Today I took out my 300 Winchester in a model 700 and shot a .330" group at 100 yards so I'm BACK. The 270 needs a new barrel although this one was nearly new when I started---maybe a 280 A.I.?? :)

maybe a 280 A.I.??

That would be sweet! Man, it's tough when you begin to doubt yourself. I'm pleased you had a spare to sort out the fact that it wasn't you. On numerous occasions, the fact that I had a large calibre rifle shooting bug holes saved me from doubting myself on a rifle that generated much lower recoil.

You will love the 280 AI. Awesome round with a lot of cool factor. A 140 gr at 3150 fps is easy to reach and impressive too.

Good call on the new tube... You get a cool new toy, and there's one less .270 out there... :)

Some rifles are posessed. I'm convinced it has to do with the heat treating of the action as I've seen them continue to have gremlins with a new barrel. Sometimes the auction house or a gun show trade are the best destinations for them.

I think the A1 is a great idea. "If" was to build another rifle that is a cartridge I would really think on hard. Its an easy conversion for you also. It would be a perfect change over.

I had a clone of your 270, only a 338-06, I even sent it back to the smith who installed the barrel, (twice), a very pretty rifle, I often wonder how the guy I traded with made out.

The 280AI is a great one.. Nice with amount of brass available it really seems like the top of to AI conversions.
