Just wondered if anyone on here had any experience using the Hornady Amax 155 gr. out of a 308 on deer size game ?

155gr A-Max head-on at 200 yds from my .308win. One giant leap and the buck piled up. DRT

I have killed many NC whitetails with the 162gr A-Max from a 7STW.

Did you recover the 155 Charlie?

I doubt that there was much left to that fragile bullet but no I didn't recover any part of the bullet - I was hunting farmland (cotton fields) in NC and they have someone that field dresses the deer for you. Kind of a lazy man hunt.

I rarely ever recovered any of the 162gr A-Maxs that were fired in the 7STW. Lung shots blew through leaving silver dollar sized holes. High shoulder shots almost never exited but bullets came unglued. Similar performance as you would get from a Berger VLD.

Got it. Just wondering. Probably going to use the 123 AMax in my daughters 6.5 Swede this fall. I'm only running about 2400 though so I don't imagine they will be stressed.

I've heard the Lapua Scenars are a "tougher" sorta bullet as well.

Out of these 3 different bullets ,the Amax ,nosler bt. the hornady sst which one is most likely to give you drt results? The sst and the nos. bt being 150 grain and the Amax 155 out of a 308 .

I got my antelope this past weekend, using a 168 grain Amax from a .308.

Granted, this is only one case, but my bullet penetrated the antelope, shed its jacket and stopped at the hide on the opposite side. I was surprised that it didn't exit. It did liquify the organs and cause some minor shoulder meat damage, although I didn't hit the shoulders.

Given this one situation makes me think that an antelope is pushing the limit of the Amax. I would try something else for deer.

I bet you'd have to shoot a 100 with each bullet to really show a difference. If it were me, the Ballistic Tip would be my choice, but more brand love than anything else.

The 150 SST worked just fine at 2750 from an old 308 a few years back.
