Amazing what effect .001" has on chamber pressure

Just got my Wilson neck die. Running the fired brass into the Forster full length die induce more run-out than I can tolerate. Although it doesn't affect the rifle accuracy at 100 meters, I'm not so sure what will it do at extreme ranges however.

You say you are not sure how the run out before using the Wilson neck die would effect extreme ranges. How will you know for sure unless you you shoot loads from the Forster die and then the Wilson neck die at extreme range to note the difference if there is any at all and if so will it will even be significant enough to note without you actually testing? Are you shooting match with this cartridge and rifle or it is for hunting?

I have 1000 yards match on the 27th of this month. I'm preparing this rifle and load for the match. I haven't really shoot this rifle farther than 100 yards so maybe I'm just over cautious. Full length sizing the brass however induced run out in the tune of around .003" to .005". That is way too much for my liking for a match round. Neck sizing dropped the run out to within .001"-just the way I like it. Now does it make a difference enough at 1000 yard? to justify all these work... perhaps. But at least that is one less variables I have to deal with. Now all I have to worry is the wind and my nerve.

Shooting match makes all the difference in the world and I wish you the best when it comes to the match. I would agree that for match work and someone like you who gives detail to his work that the run out is to much. And of course you are so right, the biggest worry is the wind indeed. I hope you get your first rounds down range well and if so your nerves will settle quickly. Once again, the best of luck my friend and please let us know how it all turns out. :)

Hey man, I am getting anxious, how did the match turn out? How did the new loads work?

Mike, the match is going to be on the 27th. Me and Frank will be on it. So this going to be fun.

Went to the range this morning early hoping to use the 600 yards range but no luck. There was precision rifle match scheduled for today so I can't use the range. I would have participated if I brought enough bullet. In any case, I tried the load I crafted with Wilson die and I'm happy with the result.

Here's a 5 shot group @ 110 yards from the bench.

3 shot using bipod prone just to check to make sure the impact does not change. The rifle never skipped a beat. I attributed that to the stability of the AI stock.

You know, I think you got that load absolutely right. Really nice, I will be out of town on the 27th but looking forward to hearing about how you do. Once again since I have the date down now, good luck, and hey, that is some real good shooting.

Man, that is smoking DF! 2900 with the 130 has to make you smile. The more I see of the Lapua, I want a M70 Featherweight built with a 6.5 Lapua barrel screwed on it!

Fine shooting with a dialed in load, Rommel. I do believe you will be ready when the time comes to put the rifle through its paces. Here's pulling for success for you.

Best of luck on the match, and yes, swapping to the Wilson dies made a difference in my accuracy at 600 yards. Typically I don't do a lot of shooting beyond that distance.

Re pressures & target shooting, it's very common for long-range shooters to use ammo loaded to max, or even above published max loads. They're looking for every little advantage. I've seen loads that were too hot for my comfort level.

Good post D.F. and good luck!

Guy
