Congratulations! So... My .25-06 is an elk rifle? What the heck do I need all those big, hard-kickers for anyway?

That's interesting. Great results, and the 1/4" exit makes it even more interesting, considering the destruction inside. Any idea what velocity you're getting with your handload?

I'm using 53 grains of H4350, pushing 100 gr bullets to 3340 fps.

You illustrate what a good bullet, well placed, will do! Man... I didn't even see an elk this season... Shoulda worked harder at it....

Regards, Guy

3140fps
this 24 iincher is really holding me back
got a 26" #5 hart on order tho.......

I honestly would not hesitate to take any north american big game specie with this load!
this was the second test.. the first being a 450lb hog and 40 yards. with identical results

I'm assuming the small exit hole is the "core" but the fact that it still has enough poop to exit is astonishing,

when i broke the hogs shoulder i thought for sure he'd need another pill, nope just a tip over!

I figure I'll keep it within 300 yards on elk and within 500 on everything else.

I'll take some pics tonight.

Just goes to show what the good ol 25-06 is capable of. My 110g AB load only shoot 3085fps, so yours isn't that slow! Congrats on the elk.

congrates on your elk chet I heard about it. but why did you yous a 25-06. Don't you fill it is a bit light for elk and take a chance of hiting an animial and loosing it. Allthough I really am impreased with the acubond, It held to gether fine when I hit my 4point deer in southern Utah. It went Through one leg ribs heart and out the ribs on the other side. It did'nt drop the deer right of it ran 15 to 20 yards and that was with the 300 ultra 180grain acu. May be the high shoulder shot is better at stoping them in their tracks. Well have a happy new year.

I was just told of a guy who killed a cow elk at around 725 yards with a 25-06 and a single 110g AB. According to him, the elk didn't go far, and the bullet made a mess of the insides. That is a little surprising to me, but just goes to show that bullet placement is more important than raw power. Yah theres better cartridges for the job, but it will get the job done. I was also told of a guy who shot a raghorn at around 600-625 and fell to a single 117g SBT. I was going to pack my 25-06 for spike elk w/100g PT's but opted not to because of the 500+ yard shots I might get. Anyways, I think I'll be packing my 25-06 on next years spike hunt. I wont feel undergunned at all. I'll be a believer in the 25-06 till the day I die, it kills A LOT better then it should for its size.

Pete,
People who can put the bullet where it needs to go do not need a caliber with more case capacity than their testicles.

When ya get in ya 60's......that statement may be somewhat in error!!

chet I have never compared my shells to my testicals, so I don't know which is biger. Is that how you decide what gun your to yous that day. I have always had an 30-06 for deer elk coyotes and what ever else I was hunting for . But to me if you are going for deer or biger I always thought 140g was low enough you need the conetic energy to shock when you hit and enough wait to penetrate and bust through bones for a clean kill. My shot place ment is good I have only had to take two shots on one deer, all my deer and elk whent down with one shot. I wen't to the 300rum for a new gun and its flat shooting. Its is a great gun I love it.
