At the gunshow a few months back I picked up this Winchester Model 70 from a family friend. It belonged to his Dad but the steel butt plate caused him dismay when he shot it so he made a me a heck of a deal!

Pre-64 Standard grade, serial puts it in 1948 as date of manufacture. It has a Douglas barrel, but inletted into the original factory stock, and the checkering was refreshed. My gunsmith tuned the trigger while he had it to go through everything and check it out.

I put a VX-2 3-9x40mm scope into the Kesselring aluminum rings that it was equipped with.

Nice old rifle, fits right into my Model 70 collection! Oh yeah, almost forgot the best part. It is a .30-06!IMG_9641.jpeg

Any pre64 is a winner! Great find! I tried getting Winchester to replace the barrel on the '61 model 264wm of my dad's, but wouldn't do it since it still meets their moa (1.5 or 1.25) before they'll replace it on their nickel. I've put over 2,500 rounds down the pipe since i started shooting it in '76. Haven't shot it in about 30 years. The throat looks terrible, but it still shot 1moa and better on a bad day.

We have two streams on our place. One normally will go dry in September and begin flowing again in early October with the first Pacific storm. It has been dry for two weeks. The second is down to just a trickle but still providing for the steers and horses. It usually will trickle through the summer. I pulled my firefighting pump yesterday. Not enough water to run it.
