Here's my new build. I could go either way. It's gonna be a dual purpose rifle both for hunting and competitions. I'm thinking either a 7WSM or an -06 Ackley Improved. Now which way do I go!

Spec:

1. Richard Thumbhole Laminated stock
2. Blue Printed Remington 700 Long Action with Williams Bottom Metal
3. Tubbs Recoil lug

Barrel can be either Broughton 7 MM 8 twist 5C already chambered for 7 WSm Match or Obermeyer 5R 11 twist to be contoured to a Light Palma.

What do you think guys!

I think what ever you do it will be just beautiful and will be an out standing shooter. Can't wait to see the finished product. Many will say the 7mm but I am an 06, 30 cal guy.

Decisions, decisions. Looks like a pleasure whichever way you go. I must say that I do like the 7mm WSM, and you have the right barrel. On the other hand, it is a long action which begs for an 06 case, and the AI would be different. Whichever way you go it should be a shooter.

I like the combo you have with the 06 AI. Its out of the main stream.
I never realy got into the wsm and wssm thing and it seems like everyone has one.

Have to change the bolt face not sure about the magazine, follower, spring on 700 long action for the WSM case.

I would do something with the 06 case both are good barrels.

I'm leaning towards the -06 also. My smith has a good match reamer for 06 Ackley. He told me that the cartridge is so efficient that it can match the 300 Win Mag ballistics using less powder. My buddy has one built by him and I'm really impressed with it's performance.

Sounds like you have a good gunsmith and someone who knows reamers and does mind build a wildcat and knows something about what he is building.

Good Luck.

Nice wood DF.
don't you already have a 7 STW, a nice looking Larado if I remember correctly?
the 30-06 AI would give you a top of the line .30 Cal.

Don't have an STW. My Laredo is chambered for 300 Win Mag. The only 7MM I have is the 280 Remington. Like bullet, something about the 30 caliber that is alluring to me :). This is gonna be my 5th rifle with .308 bore.

Yep! Southern California member here knows probably a thing or two about Jim Gruning of Gruning Precision. My only concern is the lenght of wait. He took 9 months for my 308.

Jim's work is well known. He's top notch.

I'd take the parts & pieces over to Jim, ask him to build the improved .30-06, and go hunt with my other rifles in the meantime... You know darned good and well that Jim's work is well worth the wait...
