Friend has a new Remington 770 but it is right handed and he is left handed.
Are there any economy rifles that are made both hands?
The Remington 770 does not. The Weateherby Vanguards do not.
Nice. Jim, do you believe these to be a decent entry level rifle.
I only heard a few comments about this Rem 770 but this thing shoots pretty decent right handed with over the counter ammo and for being a $300.00 rifle. I do not know what to do with this guys Rem 770. We took it out to the range Satruday and with Over the Counter 30-06 Federal Blue Box 180 gr rounds, we were shooting around 1.5" groups (often with 2 touching) and I think it will shoot better but we were shooting out of semi-hot barrel. I was also testing velocity and these Federals are shooting almost text book muzzle velocitys at around 2771.
Dr Mike, I know you test load lefty's. Do you think if this guy can shoot a right handed rifle left handed decently off a rest, might it work for one season shooting that way?
I know a guy that does, and has shot right bolts lefthanded for most of his life. And he's pretty slick at cycling the bolt over the top with the left hand. It's the first shot that matters most anyhow  But that said, I would also look at the Savage model's. My son does have the Axis in a .223, and while not the most accuratesmall bore rifle I have seen, it is still sub moa. Generally speaking, Savage has produced some really good out of the box rifles where accuracy is concerned for years.
I would also say that is pretty respectable performance from the 770.
Look for used Rem 700's too... I personally believe the older Remington 700's were better built than the current crop, and they've been available as left-hand rifles for a long time now. They're out there...
If you're not stuck on a bolt - there are numerous lever action rifles available - worked equally well by left or right handed shooters. Haunt the used-rifle racks, there are still great deals available on lightly used lever action rifles... Or bolts... Or ???
A lot of guys shoot the right handed rifles left handed, and do so very well indeed. Guy's suggestion of looking for a good used left-handed Remington is a solid point that should not be overlooked.
Right-bolt guns shot left handed are a staple item for a buddy of mine. He has a unique way of flipping the rifle up on it's side with his right hand, and cycling the bolt with his left hand. He's quick! I think Tikka makes lefty guns, but don't quote me on that. Browning makes them, but they're not "bargain priced" by any stretch. A good used left-hand Browning can be had for $400-500, though. Ruger makes left-hand bolt guns. In fact, here's a used left-hand Ruger:
I just shoot either sided, left or right handed. With a little practice, it does not matter. I was born left and converted by my parents. My sister is a lefty who shoots right handed because she lives in Jolly Old where shooting form must be on the right and up and up, pip-pip, Tally ho!
Being a left handed shooter is a curse. He can always learn to shoot right handed.
Just kidding. Shooting a right handed rifle left handed is very doable and there are many ways to work the action. When I was learning on the M24 I used to just lean into the bipod and work the action with my right hand. It wasn't quick or efficient at all but it got it done.
Wow, I did not know this to be a common issue. Of course I am right handed so I am oblivious to the left handed issue. Thanks for al the great answers. I don't feel as concerned any longer. He is just going to have to adapt, which by the way he did real well at the range after only 12-14 rounds.
Well,,,, when you consider roughly 10% of people are lefthanded, and far less than that in gun models producuced, one can see an issue.
That said, I am right, but due to left eye dominate, I just grew up shooting left. And couple that with learning on single shots, it wasn't an issue. However, that is why I still prefer a single shot to this day. Only repeater I have is a Marlin lever.
I think the choice's available today for lefthanded are far greater than 30-40 yrs ago,,,even 10 years ago possibly.
My son is left-eye dominant and right handed, as well. He shoots leaps and bounds better left-handed. I wouldn't hesitate to provide him with a right-handed rifle and let him shoot it lefty. I did run across a brand new (distributor demo) left-hand A-Bolt II Micro Hunter in 270WSM, and grabbed it for him. Still had the Browning sticker on the barrel. But, I'm thinking about picking up a left-hand, right bold laminate stock for a couple of rifles I have (in theory, could be used across multiple rifles of the same make/model, just by swapping stocks) to give him some options. You can get left-hand, right bolt stocks from Boyd's and from Stocky's, I believe.
Dubyam, I am left eye dominant and shoot either way but my left eye is much better than my right. I never liked the choices of rifles in Lefty but shoot with a scope so it does not matter. I shoot left handed with shotgun and handgun but shooting O/U shotguns it does not matter.
