I'm thinking of a 264 caliber for a new rifle and I don't have anything in a light caliber between 22 and 30. I figure 6.5 would make a great inbetween caliber for deer, if I ever do draw an antelope tag or minimum for elk if I had to go to a back up to my whelen. I took my very first deer 20 years ago with an old 6.5x52 carcano , I have a fondness for the 6.5's

Yes I like the cult calibers 6.5 and 35

2- 22lr
22 hornet
22-250
30-30
4-30-06 garands;WRA, IHC, SA, HRA
35 whelen* the hunting rifle
45-70 trapdoor cadet

I have taken antelope with the 6.5 swede and it works great. I have also worked with the 260 Rem and my buddy shoots one. 100 gr partitions at 3250-3300 fps! Can you say 25-06?

+1 POP with the .260
No speed goats with mine yet, but certianly coyotes and more than anything elk. It's my wife's late season cow elk round. I like the lighter 100 through 120 grain bullets.

I helped with 2 juvenile hunts one of which the kid was using a 7-08 with 120 barnes and the bullet pentrated all the way thru I was impressed the elk went about 20-30 yards and layed down-one additional round thru the neck and it was done. we tracked the elk about 3 miles before we got on them then had to do a great stalk on a heard of 50 to 70 animals(lots of eyes) I had taken a bull that year and I was just as excited when my friends kid got his first elk as I was getting my 3rd.

My Wife used her 6.5X55 Swede to harvest a Buck Antelope @ 290 yards
& a Doe Antelope @ 120 yards last Oct. The load is 130 AccuBond @ 2,825fps. It di great & the best allround bullet for that round that I am aware of.

My favorite rig is a Model 7 in 260. I've shot whitel tails with the 100 grain partitions and the 120 grain BT's and both were very effective. I've also taken Boar out to 386 yards and even one Elk with this round.

Nothing against the sweede, but I don't have one. My only expereince is with the 260.

I also shoot a 6.5-284 for long range targets and have thought about building a hunting rig in that caliber, but the 260 works so well I just couldn't get motivated for the project.

just had a 260 ackly built this year and it is thors hammer on whitetail out to 300 yds. (furthest shot i took on doe) 125 partitions. had to play a bit with seating depth to get them to shoot but boy when i did!!!!!!!!!

My 13 y old son shot a Rem 700 MTN in a 260 these last two years.
He has taken 4 WT and a 6pt Bull elk. All one shot kills, even that Bull. Shoulder shot at 60yds. I wouldn't call the 260 an ideal Elk cartridge but use it and watch your angles.

I shot this gun before he started using it and the only shot that was note worthy is a 350yd (measured) Whitetail quartering away. Bullet recovered through brisket under the hide.
