Anyone mess with 4000 MR?

This is the suggested powder by Barns for a 280ai and the 168 grain LRX. They listed others, but this is what they said was most accurate.

I did pick up a # for experimenting, but I think I've heard next to nothing about this powder. Do any of you use this powder for other cartridges?

Another observation from the Alliant site is most of their loads for the 30-06 and 280 call for a magnum primer (Fed 215) with the 4000 MR.

Barns data called out the Fed 210, but they listed the same components for all of the various powders in the 280 Ack load data. 4000MR was just the one stated as most accurate.

Being spherical and using Alliants data I used it in a standard .280 and it shot by far the best with Fed 215, for what it is worth. Was shooting 54 grains with 160AB. Shot good as far as accuracy but I don't have speeds recorded on it, but IIRC was in the 2,800ish range.

As a matter of fact Creemore was messing with it last weekend in a 280AI.
He was using it to fireform brass, 54 grs ( 280 Rem max load ) and a 168LRAB gave him a 1.5 in group at 200. He didn't chrono it though.
He primarily shoots H4831 in this rifle but MR4000 will get a second look.

I've used it a number of different calibers and cases. It's not bad stuff it Burns pretty clean and meters pretty nicely. In some instances you might find it as fast as I 4831 and maybe as slow as re 19 in others. It's not a miracle powder that's going to get you any extra velocity as it kind of was touted when it first came out..... but it is a darn usable powder and usually pretty available anywhere.

I did drop some test loads, but it'l be a bit before I can make it to the range. It is a very dense powder, which is probably why it works so well with such an extremely long bullet as that LRX. I'm no where near being compressed. I also made some comparison loads with RL26.

Anyway, we'll see.
