Anyone else shed hunt? I've been out twice so far. Thursday afternoon about an hour and this morning I went out with my wife and a buddy for about 4 hours. I've found 7 so far. Thursday I went out to the property where I found one side of my 174" set. This deer is still on the property and should be 180" easy! I found one year old 4 point shed and a broken piece from this year. The. I thought I hit the jackpot. I saw 2 big sheds within a foot of each other but when I walked up, I noticed a string tying them together. Someone lost their rattling horns! Oh well, they are what I was after anyways! Here are some picture from Thursday.

Today we went up to some state land and crawled through a jungle for a couple hours. We didn't find anything. So we came back to the land we deer hunt on and my buddy found a year old little 4 pt shed and I found 2 fresh 4 pt sheds and a tiny little spike/fork horn thing. Still can't believe I saw it. Here are the sheds from today

We went on a drive yesterday evening and saw over 300 deer with 5 or 6 big bucks still packin both sides. So it's still a little early yet but I'm itchin to get out more!

I was out a few times looking but no luck. Lots of snow the past 2 weeks so I may have to wait until spring now.

DT, those are some great pictures. It looks to me as if you were very successful, just having opportunity to get out and walk the land. It is good to see that you are not buried in snow.

Great photos. I don't think that we will be able to get out around here until April
but at least the cold has left the area.

Blessings,
Dan

Very nice pictures DT. Alot of great bucks in your area for sure. I'm not sure if our deer have dropped yet in our area.

Yesterday morning it was close to 50 degrees with no wind. Absolutely beautiful out. By 2pm it was 30 with 30 mph wind and snow. We have a couple inches of snow. I'll wait a couple days for it to melt and warm back up then hit it hard again

I'm not a die-hard shed hunter like some of my buddies, but when I'm out hiking or coyote hunting, if I see one, I'll pick it up. Have only found a few over the years. Nice reason to get out and enjoy the late winter/early spring though.

Any tips on finding the darn things? I've hiked about some in the past with zero luck. I know the deer are there, as we have trailcam pics of deer at the end of the season and after, still wearing headgear, so I'm pretty sure they're dropping it on our lease, or at least some of it. I'd love to collect a few.

Well had a bunch of buddy's and family come out today for a taboggan party . We went out on the snowmobiles after and I ran across these. Matching set 10' apart.

Walk heavily used trails, find bedding areas, and find feeding areas. I try to look where the deer spend most of their time this time of year. Also walk fences as they will drop as they jump/land. I found one side of my big set last year out in a pasture where the deer were feeding on left over hay from the rancher feeding cows and found the other side where he jumped a fence. A lot of times I just stumble on them. Main thing is to just get out and look with the intent to find sheds. You could also just take your vehicle or a 4 wheeler...your tires will pick them up for you. A lot of ranchers and farmers are more than willing to let guys look in order to save them thousands on tractor and truck tires

Do you put a tape on them , just to get an idea what's in the neighborhood for next year? What do you give as an average in side spread. I have measured 5 average sized mounts and come up with between 18" and 21" just a guesstimate. I will put a tape I this set to nite.

Well put a tape to them , pretty nice 4x4 matching up good. Used the B&C on line calculator( better then me at adding fractions. For a tip to tip spread I guessed 9 " and for greatest inside spread was guessed at 17 4/8. The G1 -3 and the H1-4 were entered in as taped.

These sheds came in at 128 2/8". With 4 5/8" total deductions. Nice buck be good to let him grow a couple years .

Nice sheds guys. Had a 10 pt in the back yard tonight. It is hard to find sheds when they havent been shed yet  Hopefully some warm air and free time will make themselves available to me in the next few weeks and I can stumble across a few. Happy hunting to all!

Went out yesterday after work and walked about 3 miles. Found these about 100 yards apart

That's a pretty good haul. Does the dog sniff any out for you? Just curious.

No. He could care less about the horns. He hunts pheasants and pees on as many things he can when we go. I'm scared he is going to find a porcupine or skunk one of these days. Just can't make myself leave him at home. Goes everywhere with me. Horn hunting is a perfect way to shed some winter weight

Still, it has to be pleasant to wander the fields with a fine dog accompanying you. It would be a good way to spend an afternoon.

That it is. He sticks close and loves to go after jackrabbits. But he only gives chase for 20 or 30 yards at most. I'm just tired of giving him a bath every time we get home! He loves the mud and water!
