Anyone tried the NEW Remington 750 Semi Auto in 35 Whelen?
Seriously looking at one for moose here in Canada.

Thanks,

Andy

Should be a smoth shooter. 35 Whelen with the 250 gr PT will make one fine moose rifle.

My only concern would be accuracy. I had 2 35W's in the 7600 pump and both were tack drivers. I have never seen any auto do better than 2-3 MOA at 100 yds. That to me is a no-go.

POP- My dads Browning BAR .338 WM would do an honest .75" 3 shots at 100 yards with factory 210g PT's. I would say thats doing pretty good for an auto. But Brownings auto is lightyears better then Rems auto.

Pop,

I used to own a 742 ADL Carbine in 30-06 with a Leupold VXIII 1.5x5 that would shoot handloads under an inch. I won a few bets with that rifle too!

That is great! Since I am the designated reloader for our massive hunting camps I have played with a mess load of guns. I naver had the honor of working with an accurate auto.

POP- I know what you mean about being the "designated reloader" Ha ha, I really dont mind it though. You get to learn so much more from shooting different rifles calibers and bullets.

Yeah I do not mid it either....honestly.
I just wish they did not wait for the night before opening day to ask me!

SHESH!

Old thread. Those that have one of the 750s in 35 Whelen can post there experience to date

I am considering a carbine version.

35 Whelen is such a great round

Thank you for feedback

I have an old 742 BDL 30-06 that will shoot an inch or so with good handloads. It is a bit particular though.

2 or 3 guys around here have had the 750 in the 35W and have had nothing but problems. One guy fired 60 rounds of factory ammo and had a failure to eject 60 times, this is the problem with all around here. A guy I have hunted with some sent his back to Rem 3x's to fix the FTE problem and ended up trading his off. Another was sent back and he gets around 75% function with factory, but a 180 Speer over about 2lbs of 4064 is 100% reliable, if you want to call that reliable.

I would pick up a 760/7600. The guy shooting the 180 Speer has an old 760 or 7600 I can't remember which, and it is about 110% reliable and he is not easy on his gear.

Sounds like I need to leave these alone.

I had one, fired about 50 rounds and sold it. Was enticed by a decent deal on a new one, but I also have a 338 Marlin Express and just bought a 375 Winchester which are both black bear busters, also have a couple guide guns and assorted elk rifles around.

Sounds like I should just move on.

Thanks

JD/Pop, I still have my 742 that I wrote about in a much earlier post. With a Leupold 1 3/4 to six I can keep three shots under an inch at 100 yards. The first time I did that I thought it was an accident but the rifle kept doing it and surprised the heck out of me. It loves 165 grain partitions with 4064.

Just curious. Does Canada allow you to hunt with an autoloader?

I agree with your choice of cartridge though. It's one of my favorites. I don't know if that Remington autoloader could handle it, but my load of the 225 gr. Barnes TSX over 60.4 gr. of RL15 shot clean through a cow elk at 150 yards. The bullet hit the left side right at the short ribs as she was slightly quartering away running full out. The bullet exited between her neck and the right shoulder. Internal damage was massive. CAUTION: That load was maximum in my custom Mauser so it would have to be worked up to from about 5.0 gr. below the 60.4. Accuracy in my rifle is excellent at .50 to .75" at 100 yards. Velocity from my rifle just barely pases 2700 FPS.
If I were ever able to do a moose hunt up in your neck of the woods, or Alaska for that matter, that load I mentioned would be the one I would be taking.

Yes we are allowed but after reading about the problems with the 750 not sure anyone would want to. The Browning BAR seems to have a much better reputation. Browning should chamber it and their BLR in 35 Whelen, I would seriously consider getting a BLR if they did.

Don't over look the .358 Win in the BLR I had one and it was a great little rifle.

I have a Ruger Hawkeye in .358 Win also, it's a great rifle.

Bud's Gun Shop has the Hawkeye .358 Win's in stock also.

I second Heaths opinion! That 358 Win in a BLR is a GREAT repeater. It is just as strong as a bolt gun and you can load it pretty heavily. 225's at around 2450 are some good medicine for about anything. Plus, you know it will cycle the next round into the chamber, everytime! Scotty

I've had both a BLR chambered in .358 and a Hawkeye chambered in .358. It will work wonders at downing game.

Here is some load info on the .358, TAC seems to really push them along. I load H4895 because in our one and only reloading mecca of Oneida it's about all they got.

The only deer I took with my BLR was a 215lb buck at around 75yds, after duffing the 1st shot the 2nd caught him right at the base of the tail and the bullet made it into the brisket. 200gr Hornady SP going 2380fps, he ran about 30" straight down down the ground dead.
