After "Fast and Furious" blew up in their face, I guess the ATF will manage this new policy much better. Now, they will require all gun shops along the Mexican border to "alert the federal government to frequent buyers of high-powered rifles" (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/201...ation-on-frequent-gunbuyers-in-border-states/). Yeah, they'll get it right this time.

I don't understand how monitoring the sale of high powered rifles does not do anything to stop the smuggling of machine guns and assault rifles across the border.

Also I'm fairly certain that these guys aren't legally buying firearms anyways. Why would a criminal organization spend $600 on a used and not well taken care of AK knockoff when they could buy a crate of brand new Bulgarian AKs from some arms dealer for probably about the same price?

This is called "saving face 101" or "h*ll no, I won't answer that Congressional subpoena 501". This is also lawyerese for: I ain't never pleading guilty to breaking the law, because I am the law and don't you forget it!

Well, House Republicans worked pretty swiftly to address this issue: http://thehill.com/homenews/house/171255-gop-votes-to-block-funding-for-new-gun-sale-requirements. Denny Rehberg (Montana) introduced an amendment to the 2012 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies appropriation bill to ban funding for the rule to compel gun dealers to report multiple sales of semiautomatic rifles with removable magazines. Undoubtedly, the Democrats are angered by this move.

As an additional follow-up to this post, I'm intrigued and heartened by this report of increased gun sales in Arizona (http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/07/15/20110715arizona-guns-special-report-retail.html). Apparently, the citizens aren't willing to depend on the federal government to protect them from Mexican cartels and thugs.
