I love tinkering with guns and was wonderind what the process of hand lapping a barrel is. What and where do you get the materials for the job.
I recently shot a hand lapped barrel and was very impressed with not only the accuracy but how easy it was to clean. I shot thirty rounds through a new hand lapped barrel and had very little copper and powder fouling.
Some of my other factory guns have quite a bit of copper on the patch after 25 rounds.

Barrels are usually hand-lapped by casting a lead lap, charging it with abrasive and then passing the lap back and forth in the bore. Usually more than one lap is used as the laps do wear faster than the barrel steel.

Brownells can fix you up with the stuff, but you might find a gunsmith to show you the ropes.

Usually it's not recommended you lap a barrel after it's been mounted on an action. The laping process wears on the barrel ends, and it usually necessary to cut an inch or so off each end after lapping. If you bought a new barrel that is a few inches too long that you want to lapp it might be fun to try. There are several website's that give some very detailed instructions on how to lap a barrel.
