Myself and 3 friends bought a bear outfitting service in Saskatchewan. We were told the bears were big , lots of them and there not afraid of you. The fishing was said to be unreal . This was our first year going up to see the area, hunt it and see what we had. We just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in the bush I am happy to say its all true. I had planned on recovering bullets and reporting on there performance unfortunately the only 2 recoverable bullets I failed to recover but I will report anyway.
My bear was a big black , shot with a 45-70 Marlin 1895G . I used 350 gr. Hornady bullets hand loaded with a max charge of H4895 should have been around 1800fps. I hit him 3 times , shot 1 was broadside tight behind the shoulder pass thru at a range of 10yds. after the shot he spun and loped off . Shot 2 (30yds or so) quartering away caught him just behind the ribs and exited ahead of the shoulder. shot 3 pretty much straight away (40 yards ) hit him in the ham and didn't exit I was taking care of the hide and didn't get a chance to dig for it. Both bullets that exited left bullet fragments in the exit holes. bear went about 50 yards total.
My friend Charlie's bear , a big cinnamon was shot with a 300 win mag , a gun I sold him , at a range of 7 yards he used 180 gr Accubonds shot 1 broke its back and didn't exit despite much searching I couldn't recover this bullet. My guess is that it held together over expanded which has been my experience with Accubonds up close. he shot it a 2nd time in the neck that bullet passed thru.
3 other bears where shot on the trip they where all about 300 lbs. 2 were shot with 338 Win Mags. and 250 Partions. One was a little grumpy and got to close for comfort it was shot twice both pass thru's , range was up close and personal. The other was shot on a bait at a range of 15 yards one shot thru the shoulders did the trick . Pass thru. The third bear , Laura's bear , was shot with a 7mm08 not sure what ammo I believe the bullet weight was 150gr I'll try to find out. pass thru broad side bear went 30 yards.
we still have some nice ones up there too.
